    Default safeguarding yourself against unemployment?

    Hello all,

I'm trying to understand how the unemployment benefit system works in NZ. It seems to be quite different from the one over here. We were lucky to bag a job offer for OH following our recce to NZ 1,5 months ago, and are now waiting for the employer and NZIS do their communication and for the NZIS to process our application. The job is in Wellington, where we wanted to move in the first place, and the salary is reasonable for someone who hasn't worked in NZ before. Still, a quite a few of our friends around the world have lost their jobs during the past 18-20 months, and that has made us a bit cautious about the possibility of becoming involuntarily unemployed, especially with just OH working at first.

Over here, in case of involuntary unemployment, we could get 80% of our gross salary through voluntary insurance (through the union, the state benefit is a lot lower). I did a bit of googling, and it seems that the state benefit in NZ is under NZD 150 per week, and to my understanding we're not entitled to it or to any other benefits during the first 2 years (assuming that we get PR). I found plenty of insurances against prolonged illness or disability, but not that many against unemployment, and most of the insurance policies seemed to cover only mortgages. Since we'll be renting at first for at least a year, mortgage insurances wouldn't help. We have some savings, but would like to keep them as the last resort for moving back if everything goes pear-shaped in NZ. I am planning to find a job once we've made the move, but that could take months as I work in a fairly specialised field.

What can we do to safeguard ourselves against unemployment in NZ? What kind of unemployment insurance alternatives are there? I think we would need a policy that covers a certain percentage of salary if there are policies like that available. Thanks for any help!

All the major banks and insurers offer Income Protection schemes; of course the premium will depends upon how much you want to secure and the amount of time you can wait.

    e.g. https://www.asb.co.nz/personal/insur...ome-protection

Check www.winz.govt.nz for information on unemployment benefits

Study is an alternative to unemployment, as I know of unemployed people taking up full time study and getting/retaining a benefit, either student allowance and/or unemployment benefit. Perhaps visit WINZ and Study Link for details, including payments, part-time study, etc. Also vist NZ tertiary institution online sites, e.g. MIT, Unitec, etc.

I have been looking for unemployment insurance and havent found a company that specifically offers it - income portection insurance here covers illness and injury but not being made unemployed - I was even told by one agent it was better to cover myself for critical illness ( which may occur in 20 years ) rather than unemployment ( which may happen in the next 3 months !)
Didnt find any of the insurance companies to be at all helpful with this type of insurance but if any one knows of a specific Unemployment only policy I would be interested to know
And yes you are not entitled to unemployment benefit for 2 years despite having PR - its PR in name only and gives you no actual rights !

A bit harsh, when without it, you wouldn't be there. (I realize you're anxious, and am sorry you have cause for that.)

So contrary to what has been posted it seems redundancy cover is possible

As others have mentioned Income Protection Insurance will provide an income should you temporarily loose your job. They typically pay around 75% of your income and payments begin 2-13 weeks after being out of work. Obviously the shorter the out of work period the more expensive the insurance premium will be. This insurance does not cover being fired or leaving your job voluntarily.

If you package your insurance with life insurance, you may get an additional premium discount.
