Post Cost of Living in Wellington

We are planning to head to Wellington by the end of this year and we were wondering how much does it cost approximately per month as expenses.

We are a family of 4 (2 adults & 2 Kids of 5 & 9 yrs old). We live rather modestly and can easily manage with little things.

I am trying to figure how much I need to bring with me (Ok...i know the max you have is the better). I am planning for a 6 months jobless period (better be prepared).

It would be great if you could provide indication of expenses on items such as:
    • Mortgage/Rent - I'm targetting NZ$ 250/wk ? realistic!!!!
    • Electric
    • Gas
    • Phone
    • Broadband
    • Food
    • Water Bills
    • Miscellaneous
    • Medical Insurance
    • Public Transport
    • Kids Expenses
    • Savings

    Feel free to add others.

    Thanks
    JM

    JM,

I you look at TradeMe you will see that $250 per week for rent is not a lot for Wellington. I would be very careful about choosing a place at that level especially with children as there will almost certainly not be any heating and being at the lower end of the budget you may come across damp and other health issues

However if you look further out (Upper Hutt, Wairarapa, or Kapiti) you will be able to redcue the rent. As you are not working to start with this could be a good option for you. These areas are lovely but still allow you access to the city for job hunting. Once you have a job though the commute would be long.

The cost of living calculator on this site is pretty accurate. be careful however as the government (bless them) are due to put up GST by 2.5% so a lot of costs will go up.
