Question Auckland - Where to stay????

I'm planning the big move for January 2011 and I was wondering which regions to settle in Auckland????

We are a family of 4; 2 adults, my son 10yrs & my daughter 5 yrs old.

    Some criteria for selecting region:
    a. relatively cheap rental.
    b. good decile schools for the kids.
    c. not long commute to jobs.
    d. good neighborhood.

Btw I am in the IT Sector (IT Security/IT Audit) and my OH works as Secondary French Teacher.

Great to have your ideas on where to settle.

We'll also be extremely glad to make friends with you people

    Thanks to you.

    I'm some what biased but I'd suggest the North Shore. Here are a few threads that will give you more info on the area. There are plenty of others and I have to admit to not reading through absolutely every bit of these;

If you have specific questions about any specific areas just post a question and there is sure to be somebody who will give you an answer.

    Good luck settling in NZ!

There is a book called "where to live in auckland" which is great reading and very thorough and truthful. It is well worth investing in. We bought it and fell in love with Devonport but decided we couldnt afford the area. When we came though, we realised there are houses here we can afford, but you can get lots more for you money in other areas. We bought in Devonport anyway! I would agree, though, the North Shore is a lovely place to live and no where near as busy as the south of the bridge.

Personally I prefer on being on the south side of the bridge. If you are working in IT (as I am) you will more than likely have to commute into the CBD anyway...its a horrid commute across the bridge in the morning and back in the evening from the north shore!

    Hi Guys,

I knew that NZL is really lovely...but each day reading guys and each of you praising their towns/suburds makes the choice of settlement really difficult....

I think I ought to have put the question as "Where not to live in Auckland?" makes the choices much less i guess.

My friend lives in St Helier and it is lovely around there. The "Eastern Bay" suburbs of St Helier, Mission Bay and Kohimarama are all good places to live, close to the sea and easy commute to the CBD. I commuted with my friend one morning and got the bus from right outside her door to the CBD in less than 30 minutes, great views of the sea and Rangitoto all the way, very chilled and relaxed - a sociable way to commute.

Loads of restaurants and easy access to Auckland but also easy to get onto the N1 to head south to Rotorua, Taupo, Waitomo, etc and also the airport!

If we had ended up heading to Auckland this is definitely where we were going to look at setting up shop.

The thing is, what people like (or not) depends so much on what THEY are like. Without knowing in person the people advising you, how can you tell which ones you're going to agree with? Of course you can get some idea of where to look, and also Google StreetView will give you a visual impression of neighbourhoods, but truly, the only way you will know if you relate to a place is to be there, i.e. to leave a final, absolute decision until you've had a chance to walk around.

Not if you get a ferry, or even the bus. If you drive into the CBD from anywhere in Auckland you kind of deserve everything you get.
