Default Time to start if growing own veggies?

Our local rag is suggesting it's time to start sowing seeds, eg tomatoes, indoors for own grown veg. But it seems very early doesn't it? When do you start in an area such as Cambridge....I was late last yr so want to get going earlier but surely not yet?

We've started - seedlings are sprouting nicely in the sun room. By the way, Kings Seeds are both a good online store for seeds and a mine of useful info - ask for their catalogue.

I just sowed some seeds yesterday, also will be preparing the ground soon (kind of half prepared, just need more digging, compost etc...). Hopefully I will be planting the seedlings out in a few weeks.

I started this time last year, but had a lot of problems with germination with the tomatoes, and also I grow so much that they took over a whole room. This year I've decided to buy trays of seedlings from the nursery a bit later on and save myself lots of time. Except for things that you can sow direct into the soil, and potatoes, which are chitting now.

I've only ever sown directly into the ground as I can't be arsed to do the whole seedling thing

My gardener, aka my husband, has already sown a few seeds direct into the vege plot. We've got garlic, silverbeet, beans and peans already sprouting - planted late June. He planted a few others a couple of weeks ago but I can't remember what they are!

We live in Rotorua where our max daily temp has been 12C the past few days, no frost for a few days though thanks to all the rain we've been getting.

So I could plant runner beans now directly into the ground?

Yep - we've got broad beans in but our garden is raised a little bit. They've survived the Rotorua winter so far and sprouting up a little bit.
