Default 101 things to do in Wellington

I thought it might be interesting to collect together ideas of activities, places to go etc. I live in Wellington so here goes:

    1. Visit the Te Papa Museum.

    2. Ride on the Cable Car from Lambton Quay to the Botanic Gardens

    3. Walk round the Botanic Gardens

    4. Go to the Zoo - see the one-legged Kiwi bird and watch the vets in action at the zoo vet hospital

    5. Visit the Marine Education Centre at Island Bay and see lots of sea creatures.

    6. Go round the bays and have a picnic at Scorching Bay.

    7. Listen for penguins at dusk coming back to their nests

    8. Rent a kayak at Ferg's Kayaks and paddle round the harbour.

    9. Go on the climbing wall at Ferg's Kayaks.

    10. Have fish and chips at Wellington Trawling Market on Cuba Street/Lambton Quay

    11. Have a $10 lunch at Chumeeze on Lambton Quay

    12. Eat an $8 pizza at Scopa on Cuba Street on Tuesdays

    13. Go for a beer at Mighty Mighty on Cuba Street

    14. Have a bottle of Passage Rock wine from Waiheke Island at the Matterhorn on Cuba Street.

    15. Walk up to Mount Victoria for a wonderful view of the city.

    16. Drive through the Victoria Tunnel and pip your horn (full of especially exuberant drivers on a Friday afternoon).

    17. Go to Regional Wines off the Basin reserve for free wine tasting.

    18. Buy your fish fresh from the boat at the market behind Te Papa.

    19. Go shopping at Moore Wilson's. (should you ever miss Waitrose)

    20. Have coffee at Cafe 32 on the Terrace and bump into the Prime Minister stepping out for a quick smoke.

    21. Watch the surfers in Lyall Bay (or even go surfing yourself)

    22. Go horse riding in the Ohariu Valley.

    23. Go to the play park at Island Bay.

    24. Take the Harbour Explorer trip with the Dominion Post ferry.

    25. Jump off a wharf into the sea. Particularly if it's mid-winter. Or just swim in the ocean.

    26. Fly into Wellington Airport with a strong southerly for a city view or a gentle northerly with an amazing view of Mt Taranaki and the South Island (flying from Auckland and sitting on the right hand side).

    27. Bluff oysters at Dockside restaurant.

    28. Coffee and cake at Floriditas.

    29. Bored on a Sunday afternoon? Go to Open Home viewings!

    30. Very special occasion? Go on a helicopter trip from the harbour.

    31. Go to the market behind Te Papa on a Sunday afternoon.

    32. See the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

    33. Visit Zealandia.

    34. Go to the Weta Cave in Miramar.

    35. Ascertain the wind strength by looking at the wind sculptures in Evan Bay (and watch the planes wobble when they land...)

    36. Go to Old St Paul's Cathedral in Thorndon.

    37. Frank Kitt's Market on a Saturday.

    38. Go down the Helter skelter slide near the TSB Arena (just make sure no-one's watching if you're over the age of 10...)

    39. Drive over the hills to go wine tasting in Martinborough (mmm, I sense a theme developing here..)

    40. Buy a $6 Day Tripper ticket for the bus and take your pick of the buses for a cheap city tour.

    41. Walk along the coast and listen to the oystercatchers.

    42. Walk up Cuba Street - trendy cafes and vintage clothes shops

    43. Catch up with your German newspaper reading at the Goethe Institute on Cuba Street.

    44. Go outside on a clear night and look at the stars.

    ..... please add your suggestions!

Thanks for this list. I'm off to Wellington for a job interview (on Tuesday) and I've deliberately booked a couple of days so that I could check it out.

I'll cherry pick those tasks that can be done in "billy-no-mates" fashion and if the job interview goes well, I'll should be able to complete the entire list with my wife.

    Great post! I'll add on:

    45) Take a Tour of Parliament (free)
    46) City and Sea Museum (Free)
    47) High tea (really afternoon tea) at the James Cook Hotel (around $19)

I'd do one of these lists for Hawke's Bay, but 50 of them would be wineries.

Here are a few of my favourite things (cue music ;-)

    48. Walk from Owhiro Bay to the Red Rocks Reserve to see the beautiful ocean views and from May - October the seals are basking on the rocks

    49. See a movie with a coffee or a glass of wine at one of the cosy neighbourhood cinemas - the Empire in Island Bay, the Penthouse in Brooklyn or the Lighthouse in Petone.

    50. Learn about the Southern Hemisphere sky at the Carter Observatory at the top of the botanic gardens

    51. Walk along the waterfront and see if you can spot all the poetry blocks set along the shore.

52.See the World of Wearable Art show at least once (plan ahead!)

    53. Try some of the great locally-brewed beer at Malthouse on Courtney Place or Hashigo Zake on Taranaki St

    54. Go to Mirimar and wander through California Garden Centre and Palmers Garden Centre. Have a coffee in their cafes and dream about what to plant when spring finally comes

    55. Take the 14 bus to Otari-Wiltons' Bush to learn about New Zealand native plants

    56. Drive or walk up to the Brooklyn wind turbine

    57. Drive through Victoria tunnel - honk to see if anyone will honk back. Have a very strong coffee at Salvation Coffee in Hataitai when you get to the other side

    58. Take the 20 bus or walk up through the greenbelt to Mt Victoria Lookout for a 360 view over the city

    59. Walk along the Skyline from Mt Kaukau (just above Khandallah) to Crofton Downs (the most spectacular views!) and have a drink and a meal in The Village.

    60. Visit Newtown for the quirky atmosphere, shop in the mouth watering Mediterranean Food Warehouse and enjoy (mostly) authentic food in one of the ethnic hole-in-the-wall joints on the high street.
