    Default Doctors in Wellington

    Hi,

Any recommendations for doctors in Wellington? General practice, dermatologist and OBGYN?

    Thanks!

If your looking at registering I think you will need to live in the area, not sure you get that much choice but might be wrong

I've been lucky in that the doctors' practice I registered with when I first arrived and was in rented accommodation has allowed me to stay on their books now I have moved out of the immediate area. I now live in the Hutt rather than Wellington itself.

For the general practice you will need to phone around to see who is accepting new patients. They are not obliged (from what I experienced) to take you on just because you live in the area so you may, depending on where you are looking, need to travel a bit. (but nowhere is that far) I would get onto that as soon as you get here, just in case you have to go on a waiting list.

egnz - the health system is not really like the US here unless you pay for private treatment I'm guessing. Our GP was only taking on patients that live in Island Bay, but not all doctors will be the same. If you register with one they will probably refer you to a dermatologist and the NZ equivalent of OBGYN - but the system is very different.

Does anyone have doctor reccs in Wellington? I would rather call the doctors that are recommeded to us to see if they are accepting patients rather than cold call random doctors.

    Thanks!

    Hi Lindsay
Anyone there that you would particular recommend especially who is good with children. Generally for little ones here in SA you take them to see a paediatrician not a GP not unless they specialise in children. How does this work in NZ, is a paed considered a specialist? If not anyone recommend good paeds in Wellington to sign up with and of course any other good Dr. practices. I like egnz would like to have some people recommend rather than cold calling
If you take our private medical insurance - are there practices that specifically only deal with private patients or do you still go to the same doctors just that they automatically take you as your are now paying cash?
In SA things work the same way as the US I think, we also have specialists such as gynae/obgynae as standard practice and we are used to choosing who we think is best based on word of mouth etc so this is all going to take some getting used to.

Both my 2 have seen Dr Patricia Neal, she is lovely but I've been lucky they haven't had to go much just for the usual injections, she's my Dr & she is really nice there's also an English Dr called Jane Knight & she's been great too. Sorry not sure about anything else, did see on their fees board this morning though they have a seperate fee for casual patients, for me it's $46
