    Question Is this possible

Our house has that textured coating & now needs a few cracks filling in & recoating to give it protection but I was wondering as this costs so much is it possible to change the whole house to weatherboard? IS it just a too bigger job to do & would cost more than the recoating?
Just a thought as I love the look of weatherboard houses

Lindsey, I thought, and may be very wrong, that it costs thousands and thousands to change weatherboards, even if that's what you've got in the first instance. I'm sure I've seen someone quote $100K - $200K, but like I say, I could be very wrong.

Wow wasn't expecting it to be that much, time to take off my rose tinted specs on those houses then.

Recladding the exterior of the house could cost about 80% of the value of the home which is why the 'leaky house syndrome' proved to be a very expensive mistake, leaving many home owners stranded (facing gov't assistance).

I'm a fan of bricks. It's timeless and relatively easy to repair. Weatherboard has maintenance issues but you probably would go for the Linea Weatherboard product which is a composite material that doesn't have to be painted.

Over in N. America, many old houses (regardless of what exterior finished) are getting the vinyl treatment which is PVCu material to resemble the look of timber weatherboards. The cost is relatively cheap to install - for many old houses with brick or stucco finish - the siding is applied directly on top.

Thanks for that Super_BQ, probably not an option then for us, I just wondered if they could just clad over the top but maybe not. We've been quoted $25k to get it all filled in, coated & re painted, that is the 1st quote though (although before GST rise) so could talk them down a bit, need to chat to my neighbour who used the company & see what he paid to make sure the Brit accent didn't ring in the $$$$

I wonder if this might help - see post no.6

ETA: Not sure actually if I'm allowed to link to another forum, if that is the case then I'll copy the entry

Quote: We had our church manse ( 5 bedroom) in Takanini over-clad for under $15,000. You can see photos on the transformationsetc website
I was on the committee looking at alternatives:everything else seems really expensive and I didn't even want to guess at council costs: the existing cladding was water tight ( no leaks for 50 years !) but really ugly ( some kind of experimental cladding used after the war when there were building material shortages).
I didn't know that over-cladding could look so good as my only experience had been with that fake brick which I don't like.
