We bought a 5 year-old Subaru Legacy wagon (estate) for just over $13k. Looking at ebay, it was similarly priced to the same car in the UK.

Japanese is definitely the way to go in terms of makes as they're easier to import.

Japanese Preowned is much much cheaper in NZ than in the US. Subarus are probably the best bet for a good car for a cheap price.

Subarus tend to have higher insurance costs and maintenance costs. My preference would be a Honda/Toyota for reliability and parts.

I also drive an Elantra. Love it!

I asked my Wellington cousin to help me find a car once my house is sold and I'm back in the Motherland. He said I should have no problem getting a decent used car for US $7000 - so this is what I'm budgeting.

We're taking our car in the container. We paid $10000 less for it here than it would cost to buy a similar model/mileage vehicle there. Even if we'd opted for RoRo, it would have been $3000 so we'd still have saved a fair whack.

For us it is too expensive plus not worth it for an inexpensive car. Hopefully if hubby gets the job he has applied for he will go over a few months before us and find a car. I think we will also get a scooter to use to commute for the other person.
Planning on that way he can find a rental etc before dog/kids arrive.

    Oops - I meant NZ $ 7,000 - not U.S. $
