    Default HSBC New Zealand

    Hi,

Does anyone bank with HSBC NZ? If yes, have you tried negotiating with HSBC for better term deposit interest rates? I compared TD interest rates of HSBC with other banks in NZ i.e. Westpac, ANZ, BNZ etc and the HSBC's rates is quite "bad".

    Thanks!

They only have one branch, and that's in Akl. And no link to the UK HSBC. So as 'bank of the world' then they were no use at all when I moved. Still have my accounts in the UK though.

We bank with HSBC both here and in the UK and have found it very handy for moving our money across, exchange rates, etc. They have at least two branches in Auckland, one in the CBD and one in Takapuna, and have found their staff very helpful with all our dealings with them. Not sure about other branches though.

Don't really know about negotiating on the term deposits as such, but we used to always get a competitive rate when asking "our banker" here for one while we were still living in the UK, so might be worth asking the question rather than just going by advertised rates.

Were you HSBC premier in the UK? I went into Manchester main branch and I was told they had no connection to them.
Was 15 months ago, so things may have changed. Obviously sounds like they have opened more branches.

Looking at the website they have one branch on Queen Street, a Premier branch and two wealth centres, whatever they are.

Ah, yes, we're Premier, so maybe that makes a difference then.

I hardly hear from my hsbc nz banker, unlike westpac officers who's quite on the ball and call me when my TD is up for renewal. I opened my hsbc account before coming to nz and my first hsbc banker didn't even contact me until half a year later.

Same as Duncan, I didn't find HSBC of much help after moving here from UK, faced same problem of not having 2 (NZ & UK) systems connected.
My suggestions aren't intended as immigration advice;check www.iaa.govt.nz for certified immigration specialists

Unless the situation is different here than in Hong Kong (for instance), HSBC is seeking high net-worth customers who are interested in using there investment and other services. They'll accept mom and pop customers but you will pay for the privilege, relative to other differently-orientated banks. I'm not slamming HSBC (have banked with them in the past). Again, at least in Hong Kong, they make this stance quite clear.
