    Default Weather in Wellington

    Hello!

My family and I are planning to move to Wellinton later this year. We've been hearing rather extreme stories about the weather in Wellinton during the winter. Can anyone shed some light on what the climate is really like in Wellington throughout the year?

    Ta Esther

Well it's cold... Some days there is a lot of rain and wind... some days it's just raining... Sometimes it's just windy... tends to be gloomy most of the time...

Of course this is comparing Wellington to Florida...

On the other hand if you were to compare Wellington to say Scotland the description would be reversed!!!

That's a bit unfair and not a good description of our winter so far this year. We haven't had much wind yet and many days have been bright blue sky and not very cold. May was 2 degrees warmer than any other year on record

That's how I see Winter here in Welly...

The rest of the year isn't as bad (IMO)

Thanks guys. I live in Scotland where it is cold, wet and windy. Sounds like Wellington won't be as bad. It's summer here and I'm freezing! Last sunny day was 8 days ago.

Someone told me that ropes are installed in Wellington so that padestrians can pull themselves along throught the wind!!

I'm from Yorkshire and found that the saying 'you can't beat Wellington on a good day' was accurate. Unfortunately good days were not often! The winter (IMO) was worse than in Yorkshire in terms of wind and rain and overall I found it depressing. The thing is, it is possible to have wind, rain, blue skies etc in one day so you learn to layer clothes!

I found being indoors much colder and more unbearable than being outdoors in the winter in NZ as the house just never seemed to warm up. However, there are many people who find themselves happy to adapt and live with it. If I were to choose to live in NZ again I wouldn't choose Wellington next time even though I love the city. I would choose somewhere with a more predictable climate...

You'll never know until you try!

    All the best,
    L

Hi Esther, I also live in Scotland and was in Wellington 10 days ago. It was the start of winter there, and it felt like a nice warm September in Scotland if that helps. A couple of days it was warmer in Wellington than back home in Aberdeen. For me the main thing is practically no snow or ice....

Been here eight months and so far have to say I have worn a coat twice (once was at 7am today). Generally there is a lot more sunshine in the winter here than in the UK and those grey drizzly skies don't seem to last for days on end like in the UK- they tend to move away quickly here.

Our house is cold inside first thing in the morning and later in the evening, but then we're in a rental at the moment, so will make sure we will properly insulate and heat our own home when we buy one.

Generally I would say I've had more sunshine this last eight months in Wellington than I had for the last two years in London.

We've been here a similar amount of time to April and have to say that so far, winter is turning out to be rather pleasant. That said, I only have limited experience of it! I may change my opinion when the first ghastly Southerly bites. And living in the Southern Bays we'll bear the brunt! But I'm still motorbiking to work - something I probably wouldn't be doing much in December in Derby!

We sat on the waterfront eating breakfast and having coffee yesterday morning (again, try doing that in Derby in December! Or any month for that matter).

And there aren't really any ropes around for pedestrians to haul themselves along with.
