    Default Vacation over Christmas break?

Any suggestions on a vacation for a young couple over the Christmas break? Most of the places close down during that time, I've heard, so not sure if it would be worth it travelling during this time period.

    Thoughts?

Don't know are they really closed, I'd of thought not as it's the start of the main holiday period.

My family have always been in the habit of going away over Christmas/New Year. From what they've said, the accommodation (camping, budget hotels) gets VERY booked up, so if you're intending a trip then, it's as well to book ahead.

It's a huge holiday season with a lot of people going away around this time. Accommodation and tours do get booked up quickly though so be aware and plan ahead. The ferry can be hard to get, as can kennels/catteries. It's the school holidays as well, hence the mass exodus.

We went to Taupo just after Xmas last year and it was OK though. Not too busy but busier than usual. This year we can't go away until after New Year as Mr Manks is working right through (and I've got 3.5 weeks off!) and we've managed to get cheap flights to Queenstown

We were thinking of taking a road trip somewhere near Chch, tentatively Tekapo. I checked the hostel bookings and they appear to still be available. But I'm not sure if most of the restaurants and activities will be open.. I suppose I'll have to call them up one by one to check?

As far as our experience go, nothing will be open on Christmas Day, apart from that, everything is operating as usual.
Having said that- in the 'hot spots' of tourist destinations (like Tekapo....), there will be shops/ restaurants/ service stations open, I am sure, since they can get exemptions from the rule, that they have to close Christmas Day.

One year we went to Golden Bay for three days over Christmas and since we are still not 100% used to the English way, we had planned to eat in a restaurant on the 25th....., luckily there was a dairy in Takaka who apparently opens every year and saves tourists and locals alike!

We are spending our time in a bach over at Waiheke during the Xmas break. Expect there won't be anything open except the dairy so I intend to take over lots of food/barbie stuff over on the ferry. Having said that I echo the sentiment that a lot of places seem fully booked during the period.....so I am wondering what people do/eat during this period if everything is closed.
