Default Suburbs with good number of Indian stores?

    Hi all,

I will be arriving in Auckland in mid of coming January with my family (OH and kid) and would have 14 days of employer provided accommodation. I seek your help in findings suburbs where good number of Indian stores are there for daily needs such as groceries, spices and Indian food. I have heard that Mt.Albert,Mt.Eden and Sandringham are such places. Is it correct? Any additions?

Also if you can let me know the pw rent of unfurnished (we are getting all our household stuff) 2 bedroom apartments/house/unit in such suburbs, it would be very helpful.

    Thanks,
    O

Apart from the Sandringham, there are tonnes of stores in Manukau, perhaps fortnightly shopping would be beneficial. Rental varies a lot depending on the area you choose, decent range will be $350/$375 to $550 per week.

There are Sunday markets in Avondale and Otara where you will find a lot of fresh vegetables and herbs, a lot of which are aimed at the Asian marketand are cheaper than shop prices. We go to Avondale quite a bit, we've not done Otara but people at work say it is even cheaper.

    Sorry to hijack this thread.
Is there any Sat/Sun market closer to Auckland CBD.
I visited the Sat market in Parnell, and also the one in Britomart. Both were neither cheap nor so many veg/fruits are available.

We tried Takapuna market last week and thought it was more like the farmers markets we saw in the UK - nice 'niche' food, good for a trip for treats but small & expensive compared to Avondale when it came to basics and very little 'ethnic' food. We live on North Shore and think it is well worth the trip over the bridge to Avondale.

I would say Sandringham if you intend to live right in the city, though Mt Roskill, Blockhouse Bay would have quite a few number of Indian stores. However I would say that Papatoetoe would be what I would term "little India" for Auckland.

For Sat/Sun markets in Auckland, it would be Avondale for fruits, veges or Otara in South Auckland.

For night markets - Westfield Pakuranga is very successful especially that there are a high number of ethnic stalls. It is being replicated at Westfield Glenfield on Sundays. We were there on a Nov weekend and it was very crowded.

Sandringham, Mt. Albert, Mt. Roskill have a lot of Indian shops. As sun777 and doreysc said, you can go to Avondale market for fresh veggies. I believe, in Auckland, you are never too far away from Indian shops.
