    Default Dress Code

    Hi All,
Me and my OH work with IT Sector. Is there are dress code in IT sector in NZ? Also Is a full formal suit required for interview and work there in NZ?

PS: I work with US company based in India, where there is absolutely no dress code for men and women. I am also wondering if I have to throw away my jeans and get some decent trousers here.

I'm a web developer and spend the majority of my working week in jeans and t-shirt. The majority of firms I've spoken with/met all seem to be fairly relaxed about dress. Only one firm has said that they require employees to wear shirt, trousers shoes etc, and only beacuse they deal with multi-national high profile clients.

If you'rer unsure then always wear a suit. In most places in NZ then a tie wouldn't be needed, but as per the first bit then you'll never lose a job by being too smart at interview.

Wellington/Auckland tend to be smarter dressers in general, in the Bay then it's shorts and collared shirts at the moment.

I think it might depend on the industry, I work in IT in the financial sector and business dress is required - tailored trousers and collared shirt minimum.
Definitely wear suit and tie for interview in Auckland.

    Dress codes depends on companies.

    However General Rules as follows

Interviews : Formal with Tie (Suit not necessary - but u may wear, if you please - I would Not Recommend)

General Work day -(Mon to Friday) : Formals without tie (depends on your designation and role - you may require tie or Suite for one off client meetings)

    Friday : Smart Casual.

    hi there.
i am working as a BA in a IT company in Auckland.

there is no dress code as usual.

i wear formals only when i have some external client meetings.

so it depends on the company you are working for.

as a safe option, you can have 2 suits with you and rest all the usual clothes you wear.

    cheers.

Do take a note of the climate, go for suit, tie & accessories if your job requires to be presented well. I'm in my jeans & light colored cotton shirts from Monday - Friday. I have seen some people coming to office in shorts on Thursdays & Fridays, one of the days we had Jandal day

If you are unsure, just go by formal trouser & business shirt plus one umbrella if you are in Auckland (that'd be more than enough till March) . Don't throw away your jeans, clothes are bit expensive here (at least the ones I go for are quite expensive or probably you might have to search for bargains).

For your wife, I'd suggest her to go in business formals for first one week and then gauge what is more appropriate, most of the (female) Indian colleagues I have come across arrive in shirt & trouser/skirt (plus coat when its cold).

Note - that I have never come across anyone in traditional attire on regular basis

    Hope that helps!

Are you presuming that there is world wide only one 'traditional attire'?

I would think there are various 'traditional attires' in different regions and/or at different times.

Thanks Everyone for the replies. I definitely have to buy more trousers, shirts and suits. I will bring my jeans and T's over. I have to work on my skills to tie a better tie
