Default Water tank in rural property

    Hello,

We're arriving in NZ in August and are looking at renting a rural property that has a plastic water tank outside as there is no mains water.

Can anybody tell me what the situation is with water from these tanks? Things like can we drink the water from it - I guess it comes off the roof as there isn't a well mentioned - does it need to be treated etc etc?

    Thanks guys

We lived for two months in a rented house in the Waitakeres, with all the water coming from rainwater. It was no different to live with from having mains water. It not being our house, we didn't have to do with the 'works', but were just told that it would take care of itself, and it did. This pamphlet has a lot of good information about practicalities.

We have 2 water tanks and have a water filter tap in the kitchen. The water from natural rainwater is great to drink and tastes different to mains water which has chluoride in it and when we go to friends who are on mains water we do not like the taste of the water.
