Hey now I do not find Cambridge boring, unless you are looking for nightlife. Most of the shops are open 0900-1700 and only close early on Sat or Sunday. Cambridge is a great place for older people or people with kids. there are plenty of things going on for kids, esp sporting stuff. I'd agree entirely that it's a good place for older people (it IS effectively a retirement town, although nothing like Akaroa!), and for younger kids, as it's clean, safe, quiet, sleepy, and with a lot of open spaces.
It's probably the equivalent of living in a UK village, with a 30min drive to the nearest town I guess. I can remember going to Cambridge in 2009, and the Vodafone shop had 2 phones to choose from
