    Default DVD players

    Sponsors
    Hi all,

We are trying to decide whether to buy a DVD player to ship or just get one in NZ and I'm finding it all rather confusing.

I assume I need a multi-region DVD player if I want DVDs brought in both the UK and NZ to work?

What I am finding when I look online at the NZ electrical shops (to compare prices with the UK), is that there are far more blu-ray players than DVD players - are blu-rays more popular in NZ than the UK? If so I guess I should looking into getting one that plays both?

    Thanks
    Laura

Blu-ray is newer technology. Most blu-ray players will play DVDs

I purchased a Samsung Blu-ray player sooner after arriving that could be tweaked to play any DVD from NZ or UK. Simply google the model number and the word "unlock" to check if the machine you're thinking of buying can also be tweaked as not all of them can.

We brought our DVD/BlueRay player because it wasn't that old and we really couldn't have sold it for much. As with the TV and computers, we bought NZ cords for them before we moved. (We did this for all our dual voltage electronics, but I know you won't have that issue )

This might help you decide, the prices have come right down unless your after something really snazzy

You don't tend to pay the full price as they will always knock something off or if you've seen it somewhere cheaper they would match that so just as a rough guide these are the prices, we bought ours that ended up breaking soon after & got a multi region one that plays all our UK dvds

We got a cheap one that could be 'unlocked.' In that case, the shop sold is as 'multiregional' even though it wasn't really and just gave us a piece of paper with the hacking code...

    Thanks guys very helpful.
I don't think we're going to get one here.
The other advantage of getting on in NZ is that we can use it during the 3 months we're waiting for our shipping to arrive. We were planning on getting a second little tv which will eventually be for our bedroom but will be for the lounge until the big TV in the shipping arrives.

videohelp.com is great: if your DVD player can be region-hacked (so it plays all regions of DVDs) it'll be listed on this site.

However, hacking the region setting for Blu-Ray discs is harder. And SONY players of either sort are notoriously difficult with hacking (works, doesn't work, other functions stop working). Last year we picked up a "region free" SONY Blu-Ray player in Hong Kong...only to find it wasn't dual system for the TV function (NTSC versus PAL). Very annoying.

Once our stuff arrives I'll see how we go with the SONY; otherwise I'll be shopping around for a genuinely region-free Blu-Ray.

Better with a multiregional. AFAIK all the DVD players in New Zealand are multiplayer or the shop will supply a disc with the player to unlock it and make it multiregion. Maybe you could do a web search for your player and see if you can get a disc to unlock it.

I brought over a UK HDMI DVD I'd bought in 2008 for 100GBP - it worked fine with some NZ DVDs, then I got some from local video shop, and it didn't.

I then bought an LG blue ray on offer for $150, and now use both. Works perfectly, costs are so small, worth doing it than messing around unlocking and trying to make it work.

    So use both!

Unlocking a DVD region setting is essentially punching in four numbers. It really isn't 'hacking' (or even just messing) in any serious sense of the word
