Default Prices of used cheap camper vans/cars

Hi, im due to arrive in nz later this year and am considering buying a camper van and selling it on when i leave 6 months later. Im assuming buying a camper would be cheaper and less of a worry than renting one. Anyhow im looking for something cheap and cheerful (less than £1000 GBP), just big enough for one person. After looking on various sites im seeing that "old" campers, even old vans are really expensive in NZ. Ive heard about the car auctions, could i pick up a cheapy camper there ? Is there anywhere that i have missed. It just looks as thou second hand vehicles in NZ are rather expensive. Thanks for any feedback

Well I very much doubt you will find anything that works and is roadworthy for under 1000 GBP The cheapest I could find on trademe was $2500 NZ plus on road costs
Keep looking through trademe that is about your best resource for a cheap deal but I think you need to up your budget

I have looked at turner's car auctions and the mobile homes are very expensive but they do have some cheap vans

You can also try here for backpacker campers

Search for "nz backpacker cars" - plenty of cheap cars and free advice on the subject.

As the others have said, you'll maybe get something very basic for that price and your backpacker options will be the best as they'll also be very keen to sell as they'll be moving on

When we first visited NZ we hired a campervan for the whole trip - over 3 months. The advantages for us were that we knew the van would be roadworthy, any breakdowns would be fixed by the rental company and that we didn't have the pressure of selling it before we left the country. You can get some very good deals for a long-term rental. We rented from http://www.wendekreisen.co.nz/default.aspx. At the time they only hired older refurbished vehicles, which suited us fine.

If you do hire a vehicle, shop around for the insurance if you're going to take it. We found that some travel insurance policies covered motor insurance excesses, or there are specialist companies that sell policies just to cover car hire excesses. We've used http://www.insurance4carhire.com/ when we've hired cars in Europe, but there are lots of other choices.
