Default Query on 'Recognised Work Experience' for EOI

    Hi,

I am a bit confused on the term 'recognised work experience'. In my case, my degree is in mechanical engineering but my entire work experience is in Information Technology. All of my work experience is in countries listed under the 'comparable labour market' list, but not in NZ.

Given the above situation, can I claim points for my work experience? Does it qualify as 'recognised work experience'?

I appreciate any help on this query. Thanks.

    Regards,
    AVK

    Hi AVK,
I'm afraid INZ requires Work experience in the same field as your recognised qualification and they're very strict about it.

    Best of luck.

Its not straight to answer this question. First question to ask is if you have a job offer and whether your skills fall under skills shortage list? Mere claiming points for recognized work experience may have nothing to do with your qualification as it is separate to your qualification (but again these are interrelated in you claiming points under a skills falls in skills shortage skills). To give you an example if you have a job offer then to prove its a SKILLED job offer you need to have work experience and qualification in that filed of job offer. However if you have 5 years or more experience in comparable labor market then there may not be need to show your qualification to prove your job offer is skilled.

I am naive still and write as per my understanding so sure other will help.

Also, if your skilled work helped you gain specialist skills and experiences may be considered for points as well.

"Another way you can get points for your work experience is if the work experience required, or helped you gain, specialist, technical, or management skills and experience. Those skills and experience must be relevant to an occupation that may be considered skilled employment."

    Hi AVK,

Your work experience should be matching with your qualification. If they are contradicting like you have mentioned, I am afraid INZ will not accept this as a recognized work experience. But still its better to get some update from JandM.

What career are you hoping to enter as your skill? Does it appear in the LTSSL? http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra...tialskills.htm If so, when you look it up, you will see what qualifications are required by INZ. That's the first need, to know whether you can apply for SMC.

Thanks for all the responses, folks. I hold a degree in mehcanical engg, but I have worked in IT for more than 9 years and as a 'Business analyst' for the past 6-7 years. Now Business Analyst is listed under the long term skill shortage list, but I dont have the IT degree they ask for.
Due to that, I am not even looking to apply under the the long term skill shortage category. But I am at least hoping that my work experience gets counted.

    The link http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra...tialskills.htm mentions this:

    Skilled Migrant Category
If you are applying for residence under the Skilled Migrant Category and you have an offer of employment, work experience, or qualifications in an area of work on the Long-term List, you may gain bonus points towards your application for residence.

Going by the part that I highlighted in bold, it gives me the impression that my work experience could get counted, but its still a bit confusing.

    Regards,
    AVK

For SMC, you have to show a qualification that relates to the skill that you are offering. You can't count points for your degree, because it doesn't relate to your career.

Here are the regulations for recognition of work experience. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/opsmanual/30570.htm As you'll see, you can't relate it to your qualification, which is not relevant, so you'd have to be relating it to a job offer.

With your background, it looks as though you would be eligible to be offered a job.

ICT Business Analyst is in the List of Skilled Occupations. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/opsmanual/35165.htm

Looking in the INZ operational manual http://www.immigration.govt.nz/opsmanual/46411.htm gives this.

SM7.10.1 Assessment of whether employment is skilled

An offer of employment or current employment in New Zealand will be assessed as skilled if it meets the requirements of (a), (b) or (c) below.

The occupation is included in part A of the List of Skilled Occupations held at Appendix 6 and the principal applicant can demonstrate that their offer of employment or current employment substantially matches the description for that occupation (including core tasks) as set out in the ANZSCO and:
the applicant holds a relevant recognised qualification which is at, or above, the qualification level on the NZQF (see SM14.5) that corresponds to the indicative skill level described for that occupation in the ANZSCO; or
the applicant has the relevant recognised work experience that the ANZSCO indicates may substitute the required qualification; or
the employment is in an occupation included on the Long Term Skill Shortage List and the applicant meets the relevant requirements specified in column three of the Long Term Skill Shortage List for that occupation; or
the employment is in an occupation that requires New Zealand registration by law to be undertaken and is included at SM19.5 and the applicant holds evidence of full or provisional registration in that occupation in New Zealand.
notwithstanding (a) (ii), applicants with Skill Level One Occupations can substitute the required qualification with five years of relevant work experience.
The relevant heading in ANZSCO is this. http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@....stems+Analysts

Thank you to all folks who responded and helped out. I finally called the immigration office and the lady helped me out. She said that my work experience will not get counted since it does not match my degree. But if I get a job offer whose skill set matches my work experience, then that will count. So I am now planning to do some job hunting...with good wishes from you all!
