    Question Mobile business advice

Does anyone know where I can get some business advice regarding a mobile business. I live permanently on the road (NZ) and want to operate a business from my camper. Unsure what to put down as my business address and how to claim mileage etc, etc.

I think you will have to have an official fixed address somewhere for business purposes. If you intend forming a company, that will need to be even more formal. http://www.business.govt.nz/companie...pany-addresses

Citizens' Advice or the Community Law Centres may be able to help.

IRD can give you loads of advice for free - check out http://www.ird.govt.nz/yoursituation-bus/starting/ with a look to their "tools" and the "community compliance officers". You should be able to find an advisor close to you that can help for free.

Or of course talk to an accountant or book-keeper. Most will meet you for an hour consultation to work out what you need and then provide a quote. If it is a simple structure then you might be surprised how reasonable they can be. And if you start using Xero (www.xero.com) with your bank account / code expenses it makes their job really easy (eg. cheaper!).

In regards to the address you could look at a mail forwarding service or Virtual Office provider. And to be honest I work at such a place! It is called Private Box Limited - https://www.privatebox.co.nz. We can provide a physical address (and PO Boxes) in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch as well as phone services (eg. numbers and answering calls if you so choose).

    Our competitors in NZ are:
Mail Boxes Etc (MBE) - http://www.mbe.co.nz/
    Regus - http://www.regus.co.nz/
    Serv-corp - http://www.servcorp.co.nz

MBE and Private Box are mailbox providers. Regus and Servcorp also offer office space / conference rooms as well.

If you want additional help with using cloud (internet) services / tools to run your business on the road please feel free to ask.

    Hi there

It depends on your situation. Setting up a company is a good idea because it removes you from being personally liable for the company debts. There is also the benefit of providing credibility to your business. The cost is pretty cheap to setup a company $160.22. However there is more compliance around a company - annual returns, company tax returns, company financial statements.

Xero is an excellent choice to use as an accounting system, simple to use but also very powerful. We are actually official Xero partners and could provide any advice or training.

I would be happy discuss your options with you over a coffee or beer. My contact details are below.

    Cheers

You might find that if you go down the setting up a company route, the economic development agency in the area where the business is registered can offer advice and support free of charge. Also Business Mentors NZ are amazing too. Try googling them.

sounds more like an accounting questions you're asking, you can actually go to an IRD workshop (free) that explains what you can claim etc
