No new OIA has been released recently, but from the information here we know:
* The queue for online applications had been cleared to at least 16 Jan 2021
* The queue for paper applications had been cleared to at least 07 Jan 2021
At the same time, we know the total unallocated applications, as per an OIA last month:
* Jan 2021 has 831 paper applications and 1,819 online applications
* Feb 2021 has 919 paper applications and 1,582 online applications
We also know that the Department closed until 06 Jan 2021, so the earliest date that paper application could be submitted in 2021 is 07 Jan 2021. There is no barrier for online applications.
Let’s say if the lodgements are equally distributed.
* For paper applications: there were 17 working days in Jan 2021 and 20 working days in Feb 2021. That’s around 72 paper applications submitted a day.
* For online applications: (1,819 + 1,582) / (31 + 28) = 58 applications submitted a day.
What about processing speed? We don’t have the latest data, but using the number paper applications processed from April to August 2021, they could process 501 per month. Speed seems to improve lately, so let’s say 30%, which brings it to 650 a month.
So if we are lucky, by Xmas they could clear the remaining Jan 2021 backlog and get into early Feb 2021.
Note online applications seem to be processed much faster than this, from what’s been posted here.
So essentially there are more paper applications coming in than going out.
Can anyone shed some light on this. When the presence calculator says a person currently not met the presence requirement but "check again in January 2022". What does that mean usually? will there be more a more defined date given in January? Thanks.
It doesn't mean anything, just that you currently don't meet the criteria. You could meet them tomorrow and still get this message today.
This page updated yesterday. Processing times are still the same (but not going up at least) and the oldest application being processed is from January 2020.

It’s Jan 2021, homies. Not Jan 2020.
We all know that already anyway, what we want to know is the specific date that they are working on.
New OIA released today.

a) I can confirm that as at 22 November 2021, the citizenship trained staff are processing paper applications that were received in early January 2021.
b) I can confirm that as at 22 November 2021, the citizenship trained staff are processing online applications that were received in mid-January 2021
^ This info is 1 week old, and we already know… not that useful.
Now in terms of backlog:
* Paper applications backlog has now reduced to:
- Jan 2021: 328 unallocated (previously 831)
- Feb 2021: 591 unallocated (previously 919)
I don’t actually know how the Department allocate this? I’d expect they have to clear all Jan applications before moving to Feb applications, but now some 300 Feb had been allocated as well even though there are still 328 unallocated Jan applications??!
* Online applications backlog has now reduced to:
- Jan 2021: 533 unallocated (down from 1,819) - so look like a huge effort focusing on clearing Jan online applications.
- Feb 2021: 1,557 unallocated (down from 1,582) - so 25 online Feb 2021 had been allocated, jumping the queue of 533 unallocated Jan online applications.
One would think queue means first in first serve. But it appears from the statistics given, it is not always the case.
I would like to share my timeline as this thread was my 'go to', when I needed a peace of mind or an update on the timeline processing.
Submitted online application early January-21, assigned to an officer early November-21, and became a citizen late November-21, received the certificate early December-21 :) Yaay.
All the best for all of you guys waiting.
Hi, all Good Morning
Update on Citizenship application
Applied Online from Auckland on 16 Jan 2021.
First contact to verify Personal Details on 22 Nov 2021.
Approved today 6 Dec 2021.
waiting for Certificate now.
thanks and best of luck to all other members.
Congratulations, both. :nice1
Congrats bsohel and rich12.
Could you please advise what is the title of the first contact email?
I applied online on 25/1/2021 but there is no contact email yet.
For me, it was "New Zealand citizenship - additional information required" followed by the application reference.
They tried calling me first but I missed their call, the call appeared from a private number.
I do an extrapolation based on the two backlog snapshots provided by the department - for paper applications only.

At the processing speed of 38 applications a day, it's expected that all paper applications lodged in January 2021 will be completed by Xmas. Some Feb 2021 will be allocated too, but some will have to wait until 10 Jan 2022.
I haven't taken into account:
* They hired more staff (jobs listed on DIA career website and SJS) - not sure if they got any
* Some might take longer holiday than the standard 25 Dec - 09 Jan
I just received my approval today!
Applied early January.
Case officer allocated/Confirmation details email: 22/11
Approved today.
Time for dancing bananas :raebanana:bluebanana
Lots of January applicants getting approvals! Congratulations!!
Funny story: my friend applied in February, and just got allocated a CO. His first contact was a request for a new photo, because the one he submitted was more than 6 months old. Well, duh! It's about 10 months old!:laugh
hi guys, I have a question. How long will Case Officer (CO) first make contact via email/phone after the application is allocated?
I have called DIA last Friday and they said that my application has been assigned to CO however I haven't received any email from CO to confirm my details.
I phoned DIA today they told me the same thing that my application has been allocated but it's up to CO whether they want to contact you or not.
thanks heart_prince34
This page has updated to include a lot more information regarding "average unallocated citizenship applications by month"
https://www.govt.nz/browse/passports...on-timeframes/
All I see is the backlog just keeps getting bigger.
The paper backlog peaked in Sep 2021 at 8,273 and has since come down to 7,423 in November. This is understandable because of covid-19, people had to apply online when office closure happened.
The online backlog doubled from Jan to Nov.
Hey MajorLiggs, I saw your comment in other thread which said that you and your wife are applying for citizenship. May I know if you two applied separately or under the same application? I'm pondering whether my partner and I should apply separately (under our own Realme acct) or together (under mine or her Realme acct). Not sure if it would make a difference. It's just that I haven't come across any mentioning of whether single applicant or multiple applicant applications will have different timeline for processing. Thanks
I don't see it making a difference as far as getting approval in principle goes: all applicants must meet the applicable requirements in their own right. Where the difference could come in is if you want to attend the citizenship ceremony together: in this case, one application taking longer to process (for whatever reason) will result in a later citizenship ceremony for all grouped applicants.
Thank you for always helping out with my questions. Here's another one please
I can foresee that my partner and I would need to renew our overseas passport around July-August 2022 (we're eligible to apply for nz citizenship mid Feb 2022). What would I need to do when the new overseas passports are available if you know please? Thanks :nice1
There's no official information around this, but in your place, I would keep the Department of Internal Affairs updated if you need to renew a passport while your application is being processed. I don't anticipate that this will be too different from INZ: they'll probably want to sight the new passport when it arrives and I don't see it being much more than that.

Please refer to the picture I've attached with this message. Moreover, few of my friends have actually done it. If you have no travel plans you can actually produce your expired passport(most recent) for your citizenship application. There is no such requirement that your passport has to be current.
Thank you.
Hi guys anyone with paper application that applied in christchurch on Feb has any update?
Anyone else waiting for more than 2 weeks after their first contact from CO asking to confirm the details?
I applied in Jan 21, received the first email from CO asking to confirm the details on 30th of Nov and nothing happened since then and it's been over 2 weeks. I read here that most people got approval email about a week after the first email and was wondering if anyone else waited this long after the "confirm details" email?
Also weird thing is that the email to confirm details didn't actually mention anything like "please reply to confirm" it just said to let them know IF the details are incorrect or I change my name etc. I replied anyway but didn't get anything back from them. Did you guys, who got approved, get similar email or did yours actually say "please reply to confirm the details" or any other instructions to confirm?
OK so I got an answer today (yes you were right, Tuesday =) ) apparently they just forgot to send me the "Application approved" email. Today I got an email from Citizenship Ceremonies saying that my ceremony was supposed to be on 23d of Dec but due to pandemic it won't take place and I will receive the certificate in mail.
So my timeline looks like this:
Applied for NZ citizenship: 18th Jan 21
Email to confirm details: 30th Nov 21
-- nothing --
Email about the ceremony: 21 Dec 21.
Anyway, thanks everyone for info. I'm finally a citizen of New Zealand now.
:nice1
