Congrats! That must be the best Christmas present :-D
Just contacted the Citizenship Office and was told my application is not yet allocated to any officer.
Considering Xmas is in a few days and many people would actually finish early before Xmas, we can safely assume that most Feb-21 will be processed in the new year.
I didn’t expect the Department is working today but they apparently do.
Just got an email to confirm the details. That’s more than 10 months from lodgement.
The queue is now moving to Feb-2021.
Hi l00k good day
which month was your application submitted?
was is paper application? christchurch?
mine was papper/ christchurch 17 feb 2020
thanks
Thank you ;) Judging by your timeline I'd estimate another 3 - 4 weeks or so. The Department website said 1-2 months.
I applied in person at Wellington office, around a week before you. So I think you would probably see an email from them soon ;)
Note though, if you applied by post, it's actually the date that application fee was deducted being the lodgement date. Not the date when you first sent your application pack by post.
That is because their policy stated that: "Presence is calculated from the date a completed application is received by the Department, together with the required fee. For the avoidance of doubt, the date for applications made online is the date the application is received in Wellington."

Still no news
hi good day
i receive email from DIA to confirm details
This has just happened, do you mean?
yes sir the email come at 8030am NZ time today
Hi All, Happy new year Everyone.
I applied my NZ citizenship 9th feb 2021. On the day I applied my citizenship, presence in NZ requirement on online calculator was showing me “you are eligible to apply”.
I have received an email from citizenship office saying this is how your details will be recorded on citizenship certificate if approved on 21 dec 2021. They also asked me some additional documents.
I checked the online calculator today again 17th jan 2022 to check my presence requirement(after a year) and the calculator is showing me “you are not eligible”
Any idea why is that ? Should i worry ?
Presence is calculated at the time when you make your application and pay the fee -- if you met the presence requirement then, you should be fine as far as the presence requirement is concerned.
Without wanting to speculate too much, it's possible that you are already a New Zealand citizen (but just haven't received the certificate yet), and that the calculator is showing you as ineligible due to INZ cancelling your current visa.
In your place, if you don't receive some communication very shortly to explain this, I would ask the citizenship office what is going on. Anything any of us can say can't be definite, even though it may be a good guess, because we don't have access to the official files.
I received email today asking confirmation about my details. It will be exactly the 11th month since we submitted it last year 17Feb21. :)
just a query with regards to given name, middle & surname
Since we are thru online application. I have wrote my middle name under the given name (no middle names on the form). So only given name (includes my middle name) and surname is being asked to confirm. is this ok or should I inform the officer?
Although the email is not an approval letter its kind of relief after all this waiting game.
I called them today and got this reply :
Your application is currently waiting for validation and afterwards it should follow to the Minister for approval.
what does this mean ???????????
Just curious why my application will follow to minister for approval ? I was thinking my case officer would approve it. Anyone?
Anything out of the ordinary with your application?
Have you written an email to the case officer processing your application? I think she will be able to provide more accurate updates compared to the person on the phone at the contact centre.
Every application goes to the minister. Unless it’s an unusual case they get approved by the minister in batches.
I emailed my case officer today and was advised that she had finished processing, and that it had been sent off for validation and I can expect to hear from the team within next month. The tone is really positive.
Not much information is provided regarding the process. The policy document said the vast majority of applications are approved via schedule (list of names), by a senior Departmental official who holds delegated authority. Only 200-300 applications which don’t clearly meet all requirements will be submitted to the Minister (submission). So either way, the Minister is the final decision maker, via delegated authority or by personally considering the submissions.
My guess of the process would be something like this:
1/ Application is allocated to a citizenship officer
2/ The citizenship officer assesses the criteria set out in section 8 of the Act, by cross checking with Immigration NZ and other government departments. The officer also sends an email to confirm the address, DOB, legal name, place of birth.
3/ If the citizenship officer is satisfied that the applicant meets all the requirements, the file will be sent off for validation.
*not sure what validation means here - may be a 2PC like INZ does for residence visa?*
4/ A list of names will then be signed by a delegated authority of the Minister.
5/ The Department emails the people on the list that their applications had been approved.
6/ The certificate is printed and posted.
The usage of word here probably causes the confusion, especially when you talked to the contact centre on the phone.
Hi guys
I recall that I 've read somewhere amongst our citizenship threads that calling DIA will give you the date you're eligible to apply and I just gave them a call and they told me to just wait for 5 years (I got RV in May 2017 and they told me to check back the presence calculator tool in May this year) :laugh what a rookie.
Out of frustration, I'm just posting to ask whether any of you has been given the eligible date from a phone call with them? If yes, I might try calling them again and hope for a better responding officer. Thanks all
Nah I even got different answers on how factors impact eligibility. Just calculate it yourself and check the tool once you think you're eligible. For me it came up as eligible one day after my own calculation.
The latest OIA states:
From Jan 2021 to Mar 2021, the Department received 3,288 paper applications, and 1,075 have had an outcome.
In the same period, 5,283 online applications were submitted. Around 23% have had an outcome (1,205).
https://fyi.org.nz/request/17814/res...pendix%20B.pdf
From the govt website, we know all January applications have had an outcome. So that’s 831 paper applications.
So 1,075 - 831 = 244 Feb paper applications have had an outcome as well.
We know from a previous OIA, there are 919 Feb paper applications.
Tldr; for those applied in Feb 2021 (in person or by post), 244 (26.7%) had an outcome, 675 (73.3%) are still waiting.
Assuming FIFO, the first week of Feb 2021 paper applications should all have an outcome now. Second, third, and fourth weeks of Feb 2021 would be coming soon.
It still says that I met the requirements for citizenship by grant.
For curiosity though I log in INZ account and now the latest visa I could see is a resident visa granted in 2016. I remember distinctively that there used to be 2 residence class visa applications (resident visa in 2016 and permanent resident visa in 2018) on that portal.
22/1/2022: Today would have been our eligible date to apply if we hadn't travelled for 20 days during our first 12 months of our residency. This afternoon I checked the Presence Calculator and there it was the most anticipated notif that we've been anxiously waiting for. Underneath the cruel "You do not meet...", there's a new line saying "Check again in February 2022". We're so excited!!!
My 5 year anniversary isn't til March 2022. In November 2021 when I checked the presence calculator it says I do not meet the requirements. (did not say to check again at xxx) In December when I checked the presence calculator again, it says check again in January 2022. In January it now says to check again in February 2022.
I was out of NZ for 37 days more than the minimum days (240days) on first year.
I have received email respond from DIA and this is what they said about the presence calculator:
"If you do not currently meet the presence requirement, the tool calculates whether you will meet within the next three months.
You will need to use the calculator tool again next month."
Another Tuesday without news… reading from Geekzone it seems like they only send approval emails out weekly on a Tuesday.
Anyone who just got citizenship approved recently? Could you please do me a favour? Can you try the presence calculator and see what the results say?
I'm waiting for my NZ passport. I ran the Presence calculator today, the system shows me "You currently meet the presence requirements for New Zealand citizenship by grant."
No, for me it still shows that I currently meet the requirements.
Has it always displayed the same results for you? Did you apply under Samoan category?
Thank you, so that means even when you have an approval email, the calculator results might still show the same results. I asked this because there is a guy posted few days ago asking why his calculator changed from “eligible” to “not-eligible” while waiting for the process to complete.
[QUOTE=l00k;596547]No, for me it still shows that I currently meet the requirements.
Has it always displayed the same results for you? Did you apply under Samoan category?
I have checked again this morning and shows different "currently meet the requirements". Nope did not apply under Samoan Category
Just received my approval letter in post today. Not received any electronic email.
Applied 9th feb 2021
Approved 31jan 2022
Now waiting for citizens certificate.
