we just received this morning my family's approval letter (thru email).
RV - 2015
Applied - 17Feb2021
Approved - 1Feb2022
Waiting for Cert and info if there will be a ceremony.
Congrats to all as well
:nice1
Why some people receive approval letter in the post and some receive email approval? Why can’t DIA send everything by email for faster speed…
Did you apply in person originally on 09 Feb 2021?
If you have already got the letter then nothing to worry about.
I emailed citizenship@dia.govt.nz and was advised that my application was approved on 04 Feb 2022.
So just a week shy of a full year wait, as I applied just after the Waitangi Day last year.
:nice1 Congratulations!
From https://www.govt.nz/browse/passports...on-timeframes/Quote:
How processing times are being improved
The Citizenship Office has brought in a team of temporary staff to process the applications left in the old system, freeing up permanent staff to increase proficiency and speed in the new system.
An increase of staff numbers and extra training in citizenship application processing has begun, and will continue in 2022.
Further developments to the online system will likely see a positive impact in reducing processing timeframes.
When processing times will reduce
The Citizenship Office expects waiting times to reduce by mid-2022.
Govt website just updated to say “ The oldest applications now being assessed were submitted in March 2021.” That means all Feb-21 applications should be completed now.
https://www.govt.nz/browse/passports...on-timeframes/
However, OIA releases that as at today, there are still 439 online applications and 18 paper applications submitted in Feb-2021 that haven’t been allocated. There are also 2 online applications and 8 paper applications submitted in Jan-2021 that haven’t been allocated.
https://fyi.org.nz/request/18194/res...122%200415.pdf
So that’s conflicting information.
I did notice the unallocated cases rose monthly from 18,231 in January 2021 to 33,357 in November. December however showed a decline to 33,284. Not a big decline, but hopefully we've peaked. Potentially it's just noise from the holiday period however.
"The Citizenship Office expects waiting times to reduce by mid-2022."
I'm probably impatiently over analysing.
I sent another email asking about the official approval email and today I received an email from the Citizenship team stating that no citizenship ceremony will be held while any part of the country is under orange level. Thus, they will be printing the citizenship certificate and post it on 21 Feb 2022.
So if you applied in Feb-21 and still haven’t got any news, it’s a good idea to email citizenship@dia.govt.nz; as according to the government website, the oldest application being assessed is from Mar-21 i.e. all Feb-21 should be done now.
It took me exactly a year today.
Applied in person, Wellington office: 11 Feb 2021.
CO allocated: 29 Dec 2021.
Email to confirm details: 30 Dec 2021.
Approved in principle: 04 Feb 2022 (no email notifications, I only knew this until I emailed citizenship@dia.govt.nz and they replied)
Citizenship certificate to be printed: 21 Feb 2022.
So last year they've processed on average 427 application each month, while the unallocated applications (as per DIA website) grew each month by well over 1,000 - except in December. So they're not even processing half of what comes in each month, which means that over the course of the year your wait time more than doubles (triples, as per below)?!
More specifically, the backlog grew by 15,053 over 11 months (end of Jan to end of Dec) while 5,124 applications were processed over Jan-Dec. So roughly, over 12 months time, 5,000 applications are processed while the backlog grows by 16,000. So essentially they received 21,000 applications over the year.
Please tell me I am interpreting this wrongly?

It would be interesting to hear a NZ politician's reaction to that...
This is incredibly disheartening.
Hold on the processed table in the FYI request was only for Auckland. Still probably 40% of applications but not as bad as it seemed. Would be good to have total processed, I’ll go through FYI requests a bit more later.
Hi guys good day
Today I had a bad news (text msg) that one of my family members in Australia had an heart attack, and we still have no news about our citizenship

to my shocking I got a reply in about 10minutes saying our citizenship had been approve recently but we yet to receive any email or mail about it
and now who do I contact to know the citizenship number so I can apply for my passport any contact numbers please
thanks
Hi Catash,
Love, Prayers and Condolences to the family.
Since you mentioned you did not received email or mail, below is the email I received
Are you planning on travelling overseas?
If you need to travel overseas before you become a New Zealand citizen, you must:
• use your current passport or travel document, and
• contact us immediately to let us know your travel dates.
If your certificate is sent to you while you are overseas you may have trouble coming back to New Zealand on your current passport.
If you are planning on travelling overseas within the next 2 months or you will be overseas when we send your certificate, please email CitizenshipCeremonies@dia.govt.nz or call us on 0800 22 51 51 (NZ Only) + 64 04 462 0651 (from overseas) immediately.
I suggest you have to call them regarding your situation
Hope it helps

Hi guys good day
I rang DIA today and was told citizenship was approved on the 22th February 2022
Certificate will be printed on the 10Th March so i can then ring them on the 11th March to get the certificate number
GLAD EVERYTHIG IS OVER HOORAY!!!!!!
Congratulations! :nice1
has anyone applied in April/May and has received an email from the citizenship office?
I applied online on 15 of March 2021 and I haven't heard anything from them so far.
Another annoying thing is that the last sentence on their page says Page last updated: DD MMMM YYYY but no matter how hard I looked I couldn't find what has been updated. It happens every time that sentence was updated LOL.
I just applied last month so I guess my life would be uneventful in this sense for the rest of the year!
Hi , have you received your citizenship certificate yet in courier yet??? My citizenship was approved on 31Jan and its 7th march today, I’m still waiting for my certificate. ??? What is going on ???
Hi smcvisa93, I feel you mate. Ours was 01Feb and still no certificate. Been trying to ring DiA but it is a mission trying to connect to one of their officers. Been giving myself 30mins each day since last week waiting on the phone that someone will answer and my wife is also doing this. All we have is email confirming they will send it to our address. I have no idea when (as noted within 2months) or if they will give tracking ref sending that docs. My family is not on the hurry, its just that we cannot book for domestic holiday this April Easter unless we have that certificate.
We have waited this long so a bit more patience will not harm us. :):nice1
to add
trying to call DiA....
is it just me, the DIA number rings twice then drops?... is there someone lucky enough had a discussion with DIA officer about their concern? After you dial, how long or minutes before the phone was being answered?
