    Most of the time, because NZ is such a new country it doesn't do 'charm' in terms of settlements. It does fantasticly on the scenery side though.

    I know what you mean. However, some of the charming bits are little seaside resorts and (to me) some of the old gold mining and farming settlements in Central Otago and the Maniototo. Typically these are places bypassed by the last 50 or so years.
