Default Just to top it off................

Well, as most of you know I have had a shaky couple of weeks, re home sickness/removals la la la...well, today JUST TOPS IT ALL OFF!!!!!

    Ill begin...

Friday night, feel a twinge in my left hand side of mouth...think nothing of it. Saturday eating breakfast and it decided to give me more of a hint to 'get to the dentist' by giving me a huge shooting pain...so I think to myself, I will book in the dentist next week.

So I start eating on my right side....then I go to bed Saturday night...'Throb, throb, throb'...not to be outdone, my right side now starts to compete with the left, I am now taking pain killers every 4 hours. So I am awake Sat night, pain all sunday and the same sunday night....not good, head ache and cheek ache(if that is possible) to boot!!!!

Rang dentist monday...can get me in tuesday...so I have been today...get there and fear of dentists takes over....I am now shaking like a leaf and crying!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dentist is lovely, 2 xrays later and this was the verdict.....

Left side....thinks she can save the tooth (thinks she can save the tooth!!!!!!!!!), needs a filling

Right side.....nerve damage and an abcess ( excuse the spelling...not in the mood to check correct spelling at the minute!!!!!)...

VERDICT: My dentist recommends that I have route canal surgery...she can do it however it is likely to take 3 days and she cannot guarantee the success of it. She recommends I see a endiodentist ( spelling?) who specialises in RC surgery...slight hitch...he is in Wellington, there are none in Hawkes Bay and the starting costs are approximately $900.00.She says because I am so nervous she thinks I am best going to someone who can do it quicker and has more chance of making it work. The other alternative was to have it out, but she feels I would need sedating as I am so nervous, and this would be a horrendous cost also. She did say other options, one of which involved having a false tooth that I take out every night and brush, which is not my favourite option at 27! Can't remember what else she said as I was in such a state!

To conclude: I am now sat here with tooth ache both sides having swallowed beans for tea. I am sad, cross and in pain, pain, pain I am on anti-biotics for the abcess so hopefully that will take some pain away. I am booked in for left side filling on Thursday and I am waiting for a quote back from welly guy once he has seen my xray.....I spoke to dentist receptionist this afternoon and asked her to email me my options, as I can't remember what the dentist said properly!

After all this, I went to work for the afternoon!

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...i'll sleep tonight -NOT

I feel better now I have had a rant

Oh I feeling so sorry for you, what a nightmare you've had

I have a terrible phobia for dentists as well and know I've got to have a tooth filled but just don't want to go. Same as you get the shakes and start sweating. Really have to be sedated before I get in the chair !!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, the cost of health treatment in NZ is a bit of a shock when coming from UK, don't like the sound of 3 days for root canal work. Hope the pain starts to subside soon

Love, I really feel for you. HUGE HUGS!

I've had root canal before and I'm also very nervous at the dentist. Last time I went, she had to keep pausing to ask me to release my grip on the arm rest cause my fingers were white.

TBH if she thinks you'd need to be 'knocked out' for an extraction, I can't think why they wouldn't suggest that for the root canal. IMHO I think an extraction is relatively quick and is nothing compared to root canal surgery.

Sod the tooth I say. Get it yanked out and save yourself a couple of thousand $$$$.

    Thanks for hugs xx

The problem is I had a 'whip it out' kind of dentist in the UK ( teeth I mean)...gosh that sounds a bit rude!

And so I have had one tooth taken out, same side at the bottom, which has just left me 2 teeth at the bottom right side to chew...if I get it whipped out I will only have one!!!!!!!

    I am torn...pain and cost a fortune or...mushed food!

I went through a root canal a couple of weeks ago - my 2nd in New Zealand.

I have NEVER met so many people who have had root canals in my entire life - is it a standard procedure here (an expensive one at that - I paid c. $1200 each time).

What I would say, Holland, is that the treatment I've had here has been far superior to that in the U.K that I had experienced and the dentists far more considerate.

Each time I've had root canal here they've done it over a period of 2-3 weeks to allow the tooth / gum to calm down between procedures. It's not painful (I always request max pain relief injections) but the sensations aren't nice - however, they do say it's better to try and save a tooth than have it removed - because you're effectively removing 2 teeth if it's a molar as the opposite tooth can no longer fully function.

Anyway, hope all goes well, just don't delay the treatment - it might "feel" better with painkillers but believe me, it'll come to back to haunt you...

    Hugs

That's exactly what I was thinking.

I hate (read:I'm petrified of) the dentist, but having an extraction is nowhere near as bad as a root canal - trust me - I've had both.

The root canal was a failure and I ended up having to have the tooth out, PLUS the next one to it 'cos I developed an abscess too.

Yes, I admit it - I have a small denture, but no pain.....

Huge hugs Jade and I hope the painkillers give you some relief.

    Forgot to say......

If I was going to be spending $$$$$ on a root canal, I want a heck of a lot more assurance than "might be able to save it".

Can you imagine spending all that money then having to spend more to get the bl**dy thing removed. It's a bu**er that you've already lost a couple though.
