    Default Air conditioning

Can anyone give me some idea about purchasing air conditioners - we have just bought a house and dont have that in the house - where and what should we ask for when buying one?

Have also been told to rather use heat pumps in preference to gas - as we havent had to have these before we not to sure whats the best and cheapest.

Thanks do always so appreciate the advise - Im always asking and havent always got answers to help - so thanks for that.

I'm hardly an expert by any means, but gleaning info from various conversations Mitsubishi and Daikin are, I gather, the best, most efficient and quietest makes. Others are cheaper Korean versions but less efficient.

That's about the limit of my knowledge on the subject I'm afraid.

    Hope it's of help.

    Hi Jayne,

    Welcome to the Waikato!!!!

We have a Panasonic A/C unit / heat pump installed here, it is fine, but not had it long enough to tell you the benefit in the winter.
However, this summer it has been invaluable to make the house comfortable in the heat. Even in the morning, the timer has just been set to take the morning chill off the room for the kids when they get up for school A very flexible system in our minds.

Last year we were in a rental, and the only means of heating we had was a portable gas heater and a few electric oil heaters. We did not enjoy livig like this as we were used to the UK "norm" or GCH, but we got by. The big problem is that gas heaters provide huge amounts of moisture, coupled to the normal condensation that you get in NZ houses, I felt like a window cleaner!

So, to put it in a nutshell, we think it is good up to now..... but if you need advice, Eastside refrigeration in Ham East will be able to provide you with info if you need it.

Good call StevieD. I was desperately trying to remember the name of the Ham Fransisco company that specialise in air con solutions.

East Side Refridgeration are the ones I have heard about too.

We had heat pumps installed by an engineer recommended on this site. He put in Toshiba, fab job. 2 heat pumps in different ends of our small 3 bedroom house. Were lucky we leave all internal doors open and get the heat through the house.

I only wish I had gone for the more expensive model for both as we use the air cleaning quite often in the lounge.

We set a timer for 4.30pm everyday for it to come on and put on low at night when we go to bed and just push it up to 22 in the morning then reset timer for the evening again. The good thing is is you have a sunny day it will only come on if it hits below 22 degrees.

We really noticed the difference straight away, our electric bill halved!! Have not used it in Summer as we used to live in Cyprus so quite used to the heat of NZ.

Get the biggest units you can afford as they have to work less and therefore more efficient. Our house is 120sft.

He ducked ours out of the floor and through a wardrobe so no pipes.
