Default Travel Insurance - One way?

    Hi,

Was wondering if anyone knew of a good and cheap travel insurance company who could insure us for a one way ticket from the UK to NZ. We just wanted it for piece of mind really as we will sort medical insurance out once we settle in over there in the first couple of weeks.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Tony

We got 'travel insurance' from Southern Cross but most big companies here seem to do a similar package for long term visitors who are working.

As we are on a 18 month work permit we were not eligable for NZ healthcare, or normal health insurance. But companies offer insurance designed for people like us and call it travel insurance. We did a short phone medical and it cost about $1000 for a year. Although you do have to pay that up front. Might be worth investigating if you are in a similar position. That way you will save the cost of two policies.

I used http://www.go-walkabout.com/ as well. They seemed fine to me but I didn't have to claim so can't say how easy it is to get them to pay out!

I think that the Post Office also does a one-way travel insurance.

I found 3 when we were looking:

    www.go-walkabout.com/

    http://www.duinsure.com/sites/duinsu...pages/homepage

    http://www.postoffice.co.uk/portal/p...diaId=63300708

Although I can't find a link online for the PO, so you may have to phone for a quote or they may have stopped.

When I looked at the policies they were all the same - all up to 17 days I think, so I suspect they are underwritten by the same people. But do read the small print as there are various clauses for stop overs etc.

One of the other points to check out, is if repatriation is to the final destination, say if you broke your leg hugging Mickey Mouse in Disneyland.

    Cheers

I got our insurance on-line with the post office a few weeks ago. This is the small print from their website:

    One-Way Cover
This insurance is designed to cover a round trip which starts and finishes at your home in the United Kingdom. It will also provide cover for one-way trips of up to a maximum of 17 days duration, for the purpose of emigration only. The insurance will be restricted to the cover and conditions that would have applied if you had arranged to return to the United Kingdom at the end of the period of insurance.

You can find the whole thing here:

We used Insure & Go and had to make a claim as we were delayed two weeks due to the little one getting an ear infection. They settled the claim without question ( we were really stressing as he had had an ear infection previously!).

We used gowalkabout too. They also insured us for a month after we arrived when we knew we would be staying in a motel. Never had to make a claim so don't know how good they are on that front but were definitely very friendly and helpful when arranging the insurance.
