Default Children's glasses - Anyone know if children's glasses are really expensive?

    Hi

Anyone know if children's glasses are really expensive? My daughter has quite a strong prescription for her lenses, and we were curious if anyone has experience of getting their children glasses and expense etc?

Obviously it's free here (UK) although she always picks out frames we have to pay for at least the lenses are free.

The prices vary as they do in the Uk - anything from around $150 to whatever, if you chose designer frames. Then I think lenses ontop of that. There are a couple of 'eye people' on here i think who may be able to help you more.

You do have to pay for childrens eye tests as well they aren't free here - around $65. (but shop around it isn't a set fee!)

If you have a community services card you get a subsidy of about $280 towards the eye test and prescription for children.

Thanks for this info. I think my daughters lenses are ordered in for her, at least our small opticians doesn't have them in and orders them. BLess her if she was born 20 years ago they'd be bottle bottoms!

Anyway, just trying to be as prepared as possible for any extra expenses we might encounter!

Our daughter has had to wear glasses for the last three years, one very lazy eye (not working at all ) and one perfect 20/20 eye.

We went to a high street opticians to start with and got no where, after a year of mucking around I rang the doctor and he recommended her to see the eye specialist at the medical centre. We've now been under him for nearly a year and he is so much better than the last optician, tried different things to get her eye working. It hasn't come cheap mind you, first visit was $80 then it's gradually gone down since (got another visit this weekend and think it'll be $65), this is every three months.

Then glasses the high street opticians got the prescritpion very wrong, really quite worrying really So we had to have them changed, first set cost $350 for the lens and glasses, second pair ended up getting on insurance because she lost the first pair and then managed to find them a month later Change of lenses was around $200 mark for each pair and we're forever taking them in to be mended, around $30/$40 each time. I've had friends who've paid up to a $1000 for frames and lenses.

So far I think we're up around $1500 mark currently which is a lot of money considering the UK would have been free but then you can't put a price on eyesight, we've been told if she loses her good eye then she'll be classed blind Very frightening when you consider she's only just 6 years old.

One of our older kids got glasses, and exam, lenses and frame came to $550.

Of course he manages to break bits of regularly, and we must have paid about another $100 to get it fixed, he has only had it for a few months.
