I spoke (emailed) a electrician in NZ.. here's what he said about that issue:

Who gave you the figures on wages? NZ$25 for a sparky.........not a cat in hell's chance, an apprentice wage in NZ is dependant on where you live in that you will earn a bit more in Auckland than anywhere else but the cost of living will match that. Apprentices I know earn about $10 to $11 per hour rising to maybe $13 to $14 before becoming qualified then rising to about
$18 for qualified electricians, without the benefits you mentioned, holidays are 15 days per year but you are only paid a % of you wage( about 6% of what you might earn over the whole year divided out into 15 days). Here in NZ the company's work very much on loyalty basis in that you will get a pay rise if you stay, each year and so on so only those who put in many years will earn good money (as they see it) about $21 to $23 about $24 to $25 for Auckland but that's after many year's service, There are no unions here in NZ so employers can dish out anything they want because no one will contest them and good employers are hard to find, they still live in the past regarding workers rights and belive you should thank them daily for such a wonderful job......excuse the sarcasm but it's true. The official numbers are that average earnings nationally are $22,000 for women and $37,000 men on 40hrs a week.

BUT, to employ a sparkie the charge is upward of $40 an hour. work out the sums.......and you can see someone is making a lot of money in the electricians business. I would think the answer is to go self employed.

The best figures we have available are:

Electricians: $17 - $23 per hour (more in Auckland)

Registered Electrician Wage: $48,694 p.a. (New Zealand average)

Average hourly rate (for males over all occupations): $21.56
The average NZ male employee works 39 hours per week with an additional 1.5 hours paid overtime.

Average hourly rage (female - all occupations): $18.54
The average NZ female employee works 36 hours per week with an additional 0.5 hours paid overtime.

The figures above can be read in a wider context here:

    http://www.enz.org/Work.html

    http://www.enz.org/new-zealand-pay-rates.html

Like all figures and statistics, these should be used as an approximate guide to what's reasonable rather than absolute black and white.

    Hi Nick,

Here are some Websites for you to Browse through that may give you more information.
Re wages for an Electrician. I think the wages depend on the employer too but think you would have to look at about $55-60k+ to be comfortable but this would depend on your lifestyle etc ie; wife & children.
My Brother in law who is self employed earns major dollars 300K+ a year (We are still trying to fiqure out how) he mainly does commerical electrical. So there is money to be made out there, believe me. Any Trade charges out between $30 & 50hr.
I would suggest emailing a few of the job agencies and look in the NZ herald online www.nzherald.co.nz and apply for everything and see what happens.

Average hourly rage (female - all occupations): $18.54

I don't agree with that. I'm employed by a small Hospital in Auck and I work as a Caregiver for the Elderley and go to their homes. I get paid $9.72hr less tax ( Very Underpaid). My Husband tells me to stop but I don't do it for the money, I do it because I like meeting & helping helping people.
My sister on the other hand has worked in the Banking Industry for 15 years and does get paid approx $18hr + bonuses.

    Hope this helps
    Carol

To clarify, the average female wage (all occupations) of $18.54 per hour averages salaries from all occupations - cleaners, shop workers, nurses, dentists, policewomen, teachers, company directors, etc.

Thanks for the replies, I will take a look at the links. I have already applied for a few jobs but the problem with the adverts in NZ is that they don't put wages down, unlike over here where the wage is the first thing people look at.
    Thanks

There are no unions here in NZ
I am engineer. Engineers and the sparky's I work with have just joined the engineers and printers union. They are trying to get us at least a 5% pay rise for this year, and this goes for all engineers and electricians though out NZ.
