    Default Wheat free

I have a wheat allergy and as such buy special wheat free bread and pasta, rice flour, gram flour, etc. I was wondering how widely these are available?

    Thanks

These types of food are readily available, but maybe not as much as in the UK. Your selection may be cut for example

Hi Radders - where?? I'd be really interested too - is there a specialist shop? or am I looking in the wrong supermarket?

I have a dairy alergy & a wheat problem & I have really struggled to find anything that doesn't contain them (OK I'm shopping in Pak & Save ) & I do cook everything from scratch so I do have say over what does & doesn't go into the cooking pot but I've really struggled to find wheat free & dairy (or at least lactose) free stuff.

The UK supermarkets were really good by the time we left & there were whole shelves of dairy & wheat free stuff.

I've seen plenty of wheat free pasta, the same brand as we used to get back home, just can't remember where. Dairy free is a different matter.
I will keep my eyes peeled, but have seen some stuff around, but just not the selection that some of the UK stores have. Our local butches have gluten free sausages, and our pizza place does gluten free pizza bases. Will ask around for you

    Here's an useful link:-

    http://www.allergy.org.nz/

My son's dairy/egg/nut/penicillin/animal fur/dustmite allergic. Fortunately, he has not suffered a serious reaction, just hives and eczema.

He did have ice cream in NZ and strangely did not have a bad reaction. I did wonder from this whether he is allergic to the antibiotics given to UK cows which leach into cowsmilk. Guess I will never know the truth about that. I would advise experimenting with all NZ foods ... as long as it is safe!

Thanks guys! Very useful website Glenda! I'll also post anything I find - I know there is a mini supermarket called Commonsense Organics in the City & Lower Hutt so I might take a trip there & see if they offer any wheat or dairy free alternatives too...
