Have a look on grabaseat.co.nz on Wednesdays they tend to have a weekend or 7 night holiday abroad somewhere, usually departing from Auckland.
Otherwise try the Flight Centre or House of Travel. Flight Centre usually have some good deals going
Pacific Blue have a lot of cheap fares to Samoa and Tonga during their happy hour at the moment (12-1pm daily, www.flypacificblue.co.nz) but they are usually pretty specific travel dates, so if what you want isn't there maybe just try searching for fares on their website.
There's also a lot of package deals to Fiji for under $1000 being advertised at the moment at various travel agents.
You can normally get cheap trips to Rarotonga from various places like Flight Center.

one more question: is rarotonga nice?
We were looking at Rarotonga...found Tripadvisor.com a useful website when looking at hotels etc there.
A friend of ours who emigrated from UK to NZ seven years ago (just got citizenship) was in Rarotonga a few weeks back on her way back to NZ from a visit to her mum in UK.
She said
"you should, if you have the funds, treat yourself to a stop over in Raratonga. It is a lovely little Island that uses NZ currency, drives on the left and rents out scooters and small cc motorbikes cheaply (and you don't have to wear helmets either). You can not get lost either as there is just one road around the outer perimeter of the 35sqKms. So the Island is about the size of London but only has a population of 13,000!*!*!*!* Great snorkelling too :-) I think I liked it better than Fiji :-)"
Fiji... but then I am biased as we own a resort there!!!
But as others have said, check out the websites of Air New Zealand and Air Pacific for specials. There are some amazing bargains to be had, and not pushing Fiji (honestly!) but with the currency being recently devalued the prices for flights and accommodation are better than ever.
