    Default Price of bikes???

How much for a bike for myself??

My family all have one bar me. So I have decided, in our quest to ride the hills of NZ , to buy one.

Should I get one over here or wait till we get to NZ and get it there.

Here are some bike dealer websites.

    http://www.hedgehog.co.nz/

    http://www.ubd-online.co.nz/planetcycles/

You can get cheaper ones at places like The Warehouse, but they tend to deal in 'generic' bikes, not brand name ones.

Hope your quest is better than ours! We bought 2 mountain bikes when we got here in Sept and have done a grand total of 8km on them !!

    ops: I knoooow, it's terrible isn't it

And now the park we are next to has an athletics running track and I keep walking the dog round it thinking "hmmm, perhaps I should start running"... am I the only one with good intentions as my head hits the pillow and does nothing about it??

Any runners out there suggest a good way to ease me into it? I really need to do SOMETHING - walking the dog just ain't cutting it! I'm getting fat(ter) in a country where I should be out doing stuff but the cafe's are just toooo tempting!

Bikes... hmm, let's see. We brought out four bikes with us, being fairly sure that anything you can get at the Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative (www.edinburghbicycle,com) will be better value and hence better componentry for the money than anything you can buy out here, from bargain-bin MTBs upwards.

And I reckon we were right. A specialist pista track bike costs roughly the same here at a central Christchurch shop as it does in the UK (you're looking at about £400), so I'd assume that most other bikes are the same cost relatively too.

Most bikes here seem to be a Kiwi make called Avanti, and as with anything you can pay silly money for them if you take your sport seriously enough.

But remember that now, you're earning pounds. When you start earning dollars you probably won't be able to afford as much.

So I suggest you get yourself on the web and look up the Edinburgh shop. They do free delivery on orders over £50, I think. Am I on a commission? Nope, but I should be!

A sad but alternative route towards your new steed, just shy of stealing one, would be to visit the pawn shops (aka Cash Converters) here. Racks of pretty new-looking bikes that have either been knocked off from the better suburbs or have been sold in desperation. And saddest of all, kiddy bikes that have been pawned. It's a matter of conscience, though.

    Happy cycling!

I bought my Marin over here five years ago, I bought it in winter (sale), and it cost half the UK price. The bikes in Bike shops (ie not warehouse etc) will have standard shimano parts. The more you pay, the better the parts and the bike. Prices range from cheap to pricey as expected
