Question Free Prescriptions if you are over 60 in NZ?

I just wondered if I would be able to get free prescriptions in New Zealand when I hopefully get my visa?

I get them in the UK as I am over 60. If not, how much will I pay per item?

Can you get a yearly card if you have a lot of repeat prescriptions to make the cost cheaper.

I am on blood pressure tablets and Thyroxine tablets for life.

Will your GP in NZ give you 3 monthly prescriptions like mine does in the UK or do you have to order them monthly in NZ?

    Hi there Trendynana

I too have to take Thyroxine for life and in the UK was lucky to get them for free, but here in NZ it is not the same.

I ring up the surgery for a repeat prescription for which I have to pay a charge (I think it's under $20) and then my I get my Thyroxine from the pharmacy at a charge of under $5.

Sorry I can't quite remember the exact prices.

I will post these to you when I go to collect some more.

The doc gives me enough to last a couple of months.

They may give you more if you request it, but I'm not sure.

Never heard of a yearly card. Maybe someone else on the forum might know for sure.

    Hope this helps.

My hubby is on life long medication for high blood pressure and he had had prostate cancer and still takes some medication for his water works because of it. The prescription cost is $15NZ for all of them and he gets 3 monthly supplies........no charges for the issue of the prescription at our GP he is well over 60.

    Hope this helps.
