Default NZ University and overseas credits

Does anyone know if overseas universities credits can transfer to NZ universities?
I know US universities tend to require more fluff than NZ universities seem to, but wondering if subjects relevant to a NZ degree would transfer from a US degree.

For example, in the US since I have a degree I could apply to an accredited university, take classes, and get a second degree, aka a post-baccalaureate. It would require me to take only the classes that differed between my original degree and the new one.

Anyone have any idea if this is even remotely possible in NZ? I'd assume that NZQA assessment of my current degree would probably be required at the very least.

Stuck in no-job land and getting bored! I also don't technically have in-demand skills for around here and am looking at ways to be more broadly employable.

Not really an answer to your question, but I'm currently taking another Bachelors degree, and because mine is in a totally unrelated subject to my original I'm taking all the classes and will get issued a new bachelors degree at the end of it.
However, you can take higher level classes at university and use them as a post-grad cert or diploma though - have you investigated doing that?
I didn't have to have my original degree checked by NZQA to go to Uni here, I provided them (the Uni course administrators) with a certified copy of my original degree cert but couldn't get a transcript as I'd graduated more than 10 years ago and my university are unable to provide them from that long ago.
Second semester usually starts in late July (depends on the institution) so it would be worth making lots of enquiries now.

    Hi Becky,

You and me both (no-job land). Why don't you have a look at the Open Polytechnic, as the UK equivilent (The Open University) does allow you to transfer credits - so I'm hoping the NZ equivilent will do to.

I want to get my graduate diploma in law assessed in NZ, but I know they will send me back to uni anyway and it will cost $1000 for the privilage - so it will just have to wait.

Cantubury Uni is advertising their 3rd term classes at the moment to - maybe you could have a wee look at that?

All the best, i'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us, K

I was considering a 1 year full time program at CPIT (starting in February iirc), but am unsure both if I'll get in (25 accepted/year) and if I'll be able to keep up with the commitment for assorted reasons (I think there are some elements that are different than sitting classes that I might not be able to manage consistently in the next year). I already have lots of basic coursework in science, maths, physics etc so I was hoping I could build on that with a few extra specialist courses (and not be a teacher, I don't think I'm suited for it). I found information on transferring between NZ universities but none on international to NZ universities. I have an opened official transcript and could get another (sealed) official transcript sent if necessary so I guess I ought to check with the universities around here.

Just knocking around ideas still. Thanks for the info.

One thing I've found is that Universities here are really quite flexible and helpful - far more so than they were in the UK and US.
If you know what you want to do contact them and have a chat about it. I found the tutors very approachable and more than willing to spare me a bit to time to talk and ensure I was taking the right course - they can often point you in the direction of something more suitable if they don't think what they're offering is what you really want.

I know Massey would take credit from some of my old classes that I took in the states.

I think the only way to find out is to ask the school in question.

Just in case anyone is wondering about this it seems it is fairly common for universities and other similar institutions to offer graduate diplomas and/or post graduate diplomas which are seemingly what I described above as a post-baccalaureate degree (waiting for confirmation from several places now).

I'm finding the NZ terminology in this regard a bit confusing to puzzle through, but each institution seems to have a web page (which can take some finding!) on their site dedicated to definitions of what all the PGGDip/GDip/certificate/diploma stuff means (for that particular institution!) and requirements for acceptance into the programmes.
So maybe I'm not the only one who gets confused...
