I have been reliably informed that removing the pelmets in our house is going to be a ....."HUGE" job.

If I remember correctly, unless the polystyrene is treated to prevent it from catching fire, it's quite a fire hazard?? I know that we had to promptly remove the lovely polystyrene tiles from the kitchen ceilling at our old place ( I mean, what makes someone put 'em up in a 200yr old cottage?????????? :eek and in a kitchen no less! ).

If they do go up in flames they melt, drip and fuel the fire. And apart from that they're just UGLY!

Maybe they were used as a cheap form of insulation?

    They're a b****r to get off though

Well I did wonder if it was the curtain type one but couldn't figure out why they'd be hard to remove ops:

They aren't that hard to remove Moorf but the coving on the ceiling is in front of the pelmet.
SO that all has to come off....which in turn means it has to be repositioned - the ceiling sanded and repainted and the wall also where the pelmet was attached.

Doesnt actually sound that bad when you write it down but you should never underestimate the "C.B.A." factor!

Best way to remove Polystyrene Ceiling tiles

    Set fire to them

    BIG BIG WARNING

DONT DO THIS WHILE YOU ARE IN THE ROOM THE SMOKE IS TOXIC. AND DONT EXPECT TO HAVE A HOUSE LEFT AFTERWARDS.
The glowing embers will keep your neighbours warm for a few days.

    Get rid Get rid.

Unless you have a pathological desire to sand down old ceilings with who knows what types paint etc, pull the ceiling down and put new "GIB" board up. If you new insulation upt there put "Pink Batts" up on before the GIB board.

BTDT (New ceilings not burning the house down)

Moorf - apart from the steps to your house (can't remember where they were situated), the one thing I remember from the photos of your house is that there were no pelmets. In fact, I remember posting that you had proper window dressings
