Default How much is a root canal and crowning?

Generally how much does it cost to get a root canal and crowning treatment in NZ? Wondering if I should start saving for it now....since I can feel something weird happening when I chew.

I had a crown fitted last year (no root canal) for 1100 dollars.

I guess there is no "generally", it depends on where you are and what prices the dentist has/ can sell
Auckland is probably more expensive than, let's say, Dunedin....

Root canal cost isn't a big deal, especially if one has "made sure [they] are financially ready for NZ". ...just another of those things we all prepare for. I can't remember what we paid.

Root canal- depends on the amount of roots, front teeth are easier than the ones in the back. Prices "generally" start from around $ 400.00, if it is done by a specialist, it might start from $ 700.00.
Crown- starts around $ 1000, depending on the "finesse" it can also cost $ 2000.

I had to get a crown earlier this year (no root canal) and it cost me $1400.

By my own choice, I go to a dentist who was trained in the U.S. Everything he has done for me (crown, fillings, repairs) has been top-notch work, in my opinion. A crown I had gotten several years ago broke, and he was also willing to try perma-gluing the piece back on ($200), rather than forcing me to get a new crown ($1400). (That was a year ago, and the repair job is still holding up beautifully.)

However, a month ago an old filling fell out. My dentist was in Fiji, and one of his colleagues who was trained in NZ "fixed" it. He did a **** job, and I ended up having the skin burned off of half of my lower lip along with a poorly-done filling. But I suspect that it had more to do with the fact that the guy is half-blind and just can't see what he's doing, than it had to do with where he was trained.

I'd start now asking around to friends and co-workers for recommendations based on their own personal experience. Picking a doctor or dentist out of the Yellow Pages is always a real crapshoot -- and if you pick someone who will do it cheaply, you may end up spending even more money in the long run to get it re-done properly.

Thanks very much everyone. So it costs quite a lot and about what I suspect to be. Unfortunately it is probably necessary. But to find a good dentist would be the problem- and I think there seems to be too much competition among dentists. All those ads. How to know which ones are good.....

Nathan- when one gets a root canal/cracked tooth it does not mean they are not financially ready for NZ. You can get it anywhere in the world as far as I know. I suppose for you $$ it is peanuts....and thanks a bunch for that useful information.

Batgirl, I would follow Jolies advice and ask around...., even that is probably no guarantee, but maybe you know someone who has made good experience with a dentist and would recommend him/ her.
