I'd say do the Milford Sound-Invercargill-Dunedin like you originally plan, not Milford Sound-Gore-Dunedin which is what you would be doing if you went straight to Dunedin. The Southern Scenic Route is really lovely, even if it takes an extra few hour's drive, as opposed to fairly mundane farmland if you go overland.

Yeah, we did the southern scenic route, which was great! Much more interesting than Invercargill itself.
