Thanks, he was asked to name his rate, so I assume they are expecting some kind of overtime payment.
Mooncalf, I'm not sure all contractors are on an inflated rate, when you take into account the fact they don't get paid holidays, sick pay and have to have a certain amount of time out of work while they try to find another contract, their rate seems OK to me. Plus they have the uncertainty of how long they will be employed for and in this economic climate can often be the first to be let go.
Here is quite a useful link on how some people calculate their standard contract rates:

I read Mooncalf's post as meaning that the rate was inflated as it took into account holidays, sick pay, lack of overtime pay etc etc. Not that it was inflated as in it was rediculously expensive (like, say, an accountants rate at a big 4 firm! ).
But I could be wrong and Mooncalf could be having a dig at IT contractors!
Oooh could have been.
But if your contract states a rate based on a set amount of hours a week, (eg a 40 hour week), then any request to work beyond those hours, I would assume meant that the rate would be negotiable, even more so if those hours were overnight or public holidays? Maybe its variable depending on the company?

In my experience it's as said previously, time is just charged at normal hourly rate no matter what time of day or public holidays etc.
