Nursing in NZ

Hello - new to this forum - so pleased to meet you all.

Anyway wondering if anyone has experience of going through agencies to get nursing jobs in NZ - what kind of packages might be available - but does this mean you get all the "lesser" jobs - or am i better off going it alone.

Hi Jenni,

If you take a look at posts by Lindajax,you just may be able to pick up some info from these. You will find that Linda is in this employ,maybe not on the ground floor but in a slightly elevated position. I'm sure she'll be quick to help if she can.
Also give her a PM and explain what your after. Am sure she won't mind.

I am a psychiatric nurse - possibly considering Dunedin - but not definate yet - just in process of sorting out my registeration. I did email a hospital in Dunedin about a year ago - and got a phonecall in return and Manager was happy to offer me a job pending references - but then we got cold feet and didnt follow thro. A friend of mine then came over to NZ and visited the hospital in Dunedin on my behalf - she is also a psychiatric nurse - and was very impressed with the place - however just wondering really whether the agencies are in a better position to haggle on your behalf .

Will probably do as Timbo suggest - and have also emailed a few agencies -lets see what happens!

Hello and welcome! :P

I am a nurse working in Auckland so I can't speak for Dunedin - I did initially have contact with an agency - not sure if they do Dunedin but I'd be happy to give you a contact - they were lovely. I didn't use them in the end but would have if I needed to - I just emailed all the DHB's and got offered a job that way.

Also there is a member of the forum who works for an agency in Auckland so she may pm you - although I haven't seen her post in ages.

We have a couple of very nice (from what I can gather speaking to the nurses who work there) Psyche units operating under Counties Manukau DHB and the Director of Nursing was a member of the forum but doesn't post anymore. CMDHB is a fabulous organisation to work for - very innovative and forward thinking - they recognise potential and maximise it well - I have never worked for a better employer I must say......... PLUG FOR MY WORKPLACE OVER NOW!!!

Also Blue (member) went to Napier Psych nursing.

welcome to the forum. I went through eden health to get my post which as Linda states is at Hawkes Bay. If you would like a contact please pm me. I found that the agency took a lot of the hassle away from me. I have also got permanent residency. the agencys however prefer you to go on a two year work visa but if you get PR you can change your employer if things dont work out.
I am still stuck here though as my housesale fell through twice and have not been on the forum for a while lately. The agency tell me not to worry about my job it will still be there but I need to be out to NZ by Nov as my PR runs out then.

Hi Jenni,

Zoe applied directly to the Hawkes Bay Health Board after seeing 'open' nursing vacancies on their website. They interviewed her over the phone - a bit strange and I was banished upstairs - and have subsequently offered her a job. When Zoe was talking to Nursing Agencies they weren't offering anything different to what she has done herself.

Another new and probably previously asked question!!
I am a learning disability nurse working in an acute mental health ward in the UK but am hoping to relocate to NZ early next year. Does anyone know if LD nurses are in demand and able to get jobs and also, if the NZ mental health act is the same/similar to the UK'S?

Any tips/advice also very gratefully received!!

Hi Karen

There are opportunities for LD nurses however they can be quite limited, that said healthboards requirements change all the time

I work in health recruitment and always refer people wanting to know more about the structure of health services here to http://www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf That should provide you all the info you should need.
