    Default Baggage limit

Were going to Auckland On July 3 planning to get economy flights from Air New Zealand. Just wondering how much is the size/weight limit for hand luggage and check in baggage. Only one hand luggage and one check in baggage are allowed per person right? Thanks.

I'm assuming you're flying from the UK. From the Air NZ UK website:

    Checked baggage

International travel (tickets issued from 26 May 10)

Economy 1 piece, max weight 23kg (50 lbs)
Premium Economy* 2 pieces, max weight 23kg (50 lbs) per piece

Business* 3 pieces, max weight 23kg (50 lbs) per piece

Gold Elite / Gold / Star Gold and Koru Club Members 1 additional piece per person, max 23kg (max 3 pieces)

If your travel originates in Tahiti, see separate allowance.

    * This Premium Economy and Business baggage allowance applies on Air New Zealand flights. If part of your journey includes codeshare flights or flights on other airlines you will need to check the operating carriers' websites for their allowance.

    For all flights:

In addition to other allowances, strollers and car seats are permitted free of charge.
Any piece of baggage that weighs over 23kg but less than 32kg will be subject to an overweight charge.
The maximum weight limit of 32kg (70lbs) for any individual piece of baggage is an industry standard. It does not relate to your overall entitlement but is a safety measure to reduce injuries to baggage handling staff. Any item over 32kgs will require repacking
Each piece of baggage should not exceed total dimensions (length + width + height) of 158cm (62")
    Hand/cabin baggage

Pacific Economy Class customers may take one piece of cabin baggage with a maximum weight of 7kg (15lbs) and maximum total dimensions (length + width + height) of 115cm (45").
Business Class, Premium Economy* and Star Alliance Gold customers (including Airpoints Gold and Gold Elite) are permitted two pieces of cabin baggage with a maximum weight of 7kg (15lbs) and maximum total dimensions (length + width + height) of 115cm (45").
Exception: Only one piece is permitted for travel to, through or from USA.

In addition to your allowance, you may also carry on board personal items such as an overcoat, handbag, walking stick, camera or slimline laptop. As a safety precaution, all cabin baggage must be able to fit in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you.

We're actually flying from the USA (San Francisco, California).

So check the Air NZ US site - although I can't see any differences off the bat

I would recommend that you keep on checking your airline's website for conditions right up to your travel date, as these can change. Likewise, look at the website of the airport you're going to fly from, as they can impose restrictions which override what an airline would permit. (This happened to us flying Air NZ out of London Heathrow in 2007.)

We flew through SFO to NZ last week and were able to take two checked bags each because we booked prior to the change. Our flight from Denver to SFO was on United and they didn't blink an eye at what we had (United charges for all luggage). I would assume you're now limited to one carry-on and one checked bag.

If Air NZ's 1 piece restriction makes you reconsider the carrier, here's what Qantas says on their website on checked in luggage:

    International^ to/from The Americas+ First/Business:
    2 pieces at 32kg (70lb) per piece
    Premium Economy/Economy:
    2 pieces at 23kg (50lb) per piece

Total dimensions of the 2 pieces must not exceed 270cm (106in) with no 1 piece exceeding 158cm (62in) No single piece can exceed 32kg (70lb)

    and on carry-on ones:

The United States Department of Homeland Security has instructed all airlines to apply new security measures for flights from the United States and into the United States from Australia and New Zealand.

Passengers may only carry on one bag plus a personal item, such as a purse, briefcase, backpack or similar, per passenger. Medical assistance items (crutches, wheelchairs etc) are exempt from this requirement. These limits are strictly enforced at all airport security checkpoints and on board departing Qantas flights. Note: this new limitation only impacts on the allowance for First and Business Class customers. Economy Class limits are unaffected.

Customers are limited on the amount of liquids/gels/pastes they are permitted to take as carry on baggage. Customers are permitted to carry 1 clear transparent resealable 1 quart (1 litre) size plastic bag containing liquids, gels and/or aerosols in containers of 3.3oz (100ml) capacity or less per container. The contents of the plastic bag must fit comfortably and the plastic bag must be completely closed/sealed. This bag must be presented separately for screening.

Qantas recommends liquids in excess of this allowance be placed in checked baggage before progressing to check-in. This includes (but is not limited to) the following items:

duty free purchases obtained before the security check point inspections,
    beverages (including duty free purchases),
    shampoos,
    suntan lotions,
    creams,
    toothpastes,
hair gel, hair spray or other items of a similar consistency.

You can also prepay for additional luggage.

Also, do bear in mind that often carrier's flights are operated by another airline, and they can/do impose their own limits, so look carefully at your ticket and call the other carriers if necessary. Check on their website and call if it's ambiguous.
