Hi All,
I am thinking about moving to New Zealand and will probably move in the next couple of months. Does anyone know if I can take the cordless phones from my house in the UK and my TV to NZ and will they work?
Hi All,
I am thinking about moving to New Zealand and will probably move in the next couple of months. Does anyone know if I can take the cordless phones from my house in the UK and my TV to NZ and will they work?
We were told that the cordless phones might interfere with local police frequencies. So, we'll be leaving our behind.
If you plan to use your TV as monitor display (hooked up to a separate receiver like Sky or Freeview box) then it should be fine. Cordless phones too should present no problems because they have a limited range and can't see them causing any interference with say the police radio.
Thanks I will take the phones and try them. I plan to get sky eventually but before I do would the tv not work with the normal NZ TV ariel?
Whilst the phones from the UK will work fine in NZ, officially they must have a telepermit to be allowed to be connected to the network.
For the TV, it may or may not work without any problems it all depends on the TV model so without providing more information, we can't tell you one way or the other.
Note that the TV standard in UK is PAL/I and in NZ it is PAL/BG, if your TV can handle PAL/BG standard then it should work although it is still possible that you won't be able to tune in a few channels.
Also note that if you have a UK Freeview receiver then this isn't compatible with the NZ version.

Thanks Ian
The TV is a sony bravia - only a year old. Hopefully if I get Sky it will be OK. I have never heard of the telepermit for the phones. Is it something you can buy or do they need to be tested?
Thanks,
Stuart
Don't worry about it - it's not something you need. I believe there's actually a similar scheme in the UK, where phones need to be approved for use on the BT network, but it's not something anyone is ever going to check up on. Just bring your phone and plug it in, and see if it works.
For the TV, you need to check either in the manual or the menu to see if it lists PAL/BG as an option? Alternatively if you post the model number, someone may be able to check.
If you are going to get Sky, then it won't be an issue anyway, so wouldn't worry about it - BTW Sky+ in NZ is called My Sky, or you can get the HD version My Sky HDi.
For the phone, see telepermit for details.
