Getting a car in Auckland?

Hi guys,

What would your advice be for someone who is looking for a used car in auckland? Upon arrival, i would be renting a car for 1 / 2 weeks and during that time would like to explore a trustworthy 2nd hand car preferably below 5k.

1. Do car dealers in auckland actually help verify that the used cars they sell are fit to drive? i'm guessing not just passing WOF, but has actual mechanics to verify it. Any reputable shops to recommend?

2. Does NZ cars need yearly insurance?

3. Is there any road tax involved in having a car in NZ?

4. Would sellers actually be responsible to these paperwork to ensure it is properly done and transfer it to new buyer's name?

Most advertise through TradeMe, which also gives you a sense of which companies have a better reputation. We looked at some listings, then made an appointment at the various dealers. We didn't buy anything on TradeMe--just used the site for info. There's a steady stream of ex-Japan used cars of good quality on offer it seems.

Response: Insurance is optional but recommended.

Response: Yes. You can go to a kiosk in a post office to have it renewed.
