    Default we have arrived

So we arrived after a very long flight and we get to immigration and we wondered if he would say welcome home, and he did. It was an amazing feeling and then he spoiled it by saying we had to renew our visas within two years. This caused both of our jet lagged brains to go into panic mode, without reason accurately as he was talking about our returning residents visas not our PR ones.

Got through MAF without problems with our gravy and tea bags! Didn't even get a chance to pet the dog the process was so quick.

Don't have internet access of our own yet, but will keep you all updated on progress when we can.

Welcome to NZ! Effectively the returning residents visa is the PR one - there isn't anything else. Your residence permit expires any time you leave NZ, and the returning residents visa is what gets you a new one when you come back. So if you don't renew it in 2 years there's no guarantee you'd be allowed to continue to live in NZ. Of course you could get round it by never leaving the country.

Is this correct? Can you point me at where the info is from because it's not the way I understand it.

I wouldn't have put it in exactly those words, but that is true in effect. You'll see if you check with this page and the various links off it. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra...ningresidents/ If you qualify for and obtain IRRV, usually by having lived more than half your time in NZ for the two years after you activate your PR, you don't have to renew it any more, just have it transferred whenever you renew your passport.
