    Default Cheap Bare Essentials

    Hi Everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster here. My wife & I are coming over to Auckland in a month on a 30 month work VISA sponsored by her company, and have shipped out virtually the entire contents of our house yesterday. When we will arrive her company have provided us with the home search service, to find us a decent unfurnished rental property.

We just got the details of the ship taking our stuff over today, and it looks like we are going to have a full month in an empty house waiting for our stuff to arrive. Can anyone recommend a shop similar to Ikea, where we can pick up a few dirt cheap bare essentials, like pots, pans & plates and cutlery, inflatable mattress, bedding etc in the Auckland area to make our month more enjoyable?

    Thanks in advance!

If you are lucky you may be able to find a Wharehouse nearby, I have found their prices for basic items to be pretty good.

If you don't fancy sleeping on the floor, you can hire furniture and whitewear from DTR at very reasonable prices. It's basic but solid furniture plus they deliver and collect stuff.

Our stuff is arriving on Monday..a friend, met off this board (thanks Peebles16), has loaned us kitchen stuff (and we brought some plastic camping stuff with us), our landlords from the furnished flat we spent a month in loaned us a mattress (they offered us the bed..but we figured that for 3 weeks the mattress would do by itself!) and a deckchair. We picked up a "Poang style" chair and some basic cubes and towels, sheets and clothes airer from The Warehouse (not sure how long they will last) and OH is delighted with his Lazy Boy recliner from Smiths City Clearance! And we bought a new telly (but we had budgeted for that in our move!) We knew that we wanted to enlarge our freezer and found a really cheap one for clearance at Bond and Bond for about $250 for a 3 drawer freezer and then paid $99 for a bar fridge, which is big enough for milke, butter etc. We rented a washing machine from Mr Rentals for $120 for as long as it took the container to arrive!

We brought sleeping bags and some sleeping mats and microfibre towels with us with some light weight camping gear.

Camping out in a house with a log stove and heat pump is a breeze after some NW Scotland campsites in summer but must admit that I am looking forward to the furniture's arrival on Monday!

Even second hand stuff is expensive here so I would rent the furniture for the month..and buy the soft furnishings and crockery / cutelry from somewhere like Briscoes.

Otherwsie how about buying some camping stuff (sleeping bags, beds, tables, wardrobes, shelves etc.) You can then either use them to go camping or sell them nearer summer for virtually no loss.

Maybe some one on the forum has a few things to lend...you can pass them to another in need after your stuff arrives
