    Default Child medicals

Some may have seen my thread in the lounge about our little one who has just been in hospital with a bladder infection. She is going to need to be monitored and prescribed her antibiotics once we get to NZ in Oct. We will hopefully be applying for PR once in NZ. She is 3 - will her medical history be required or is it just a chest x-ray for kids under 6? Also, any info on private paediatricians in the Auckland area would be appreciated.

Chest x-rays are only for children aged 11 and older.

Younger children generally get measured, weighed, glands checked, spine checked, eye slight and hearing checked and medical history taken to see if there are any long-term health issues that will cost NZ money. It's all the same sort of thing that would be done in a regular well-child type of check. I wouldn't think an infection would be grounds for any sort of problem, although if you have a medical whilst your child has enlarged glands/lymph nodes as a result of an infection it would (or should) be noted on the medical form, and a picky case officer could potentially refer this to a medical panel. There was a case posted somewhere here in the past where a 3 year olds medical got referred for something similar, but I can't find the link. It might be wise to wait until this issue is resolved before having medicals done.

You've got it backwards. Everyone, children included, must have a medical, but children under 11 and pregnant women are not normally expected to have a chest X-ray.

Yes, did get it backwards, thanks. The fact that she will be on antibiotics for at least 6 months to prevent infection caused by any possible reflux shouldn't be a problem? Where can I see a copy of the medical form required for kids?

    As ever, NZIS.

(It really does do to make friends with the NZ immigration website - the answers to SO MANY questions are right there. You can use Google Advanced Search facility to get it to search that site, and know you're getting sound information.)

I wouldn't like to bet on what will happen. The usual procedure is that if ANY abnormality is signalled by the doctor at the medical, the case will be referred to an MA. I think you would be well advised to get a copy of all your daughter's case notes and an opinion from the specialist treating her at the moment, as to the likely outcome and period of recovery, right now, and submit those along with your PR application, as they MAY deflect some of the MA's questions. But very often, the MA asks for a specialist's report following another examination at the time of the referral. Questions and reports can bounce back and forth for quite some time.

Right - checked out the form and will have to get a full report from her paediatrician I think. We will only know after her scope in about 6 weeks what the long term prognosis will be so everything crossed for the moment. Thanks for the help!
