Default Applying for Work Visa while holding a student Visa in NZ?

    Hello everyone!
Would like to ask if it is possible to apply for a working visa or Work-to-Residence permit while holding a student visa and currently staying at NZ?
    Thanks!

Look here http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/ at the links giving details of the requirements for Work to Residence and Temporary Work permits.

On my reading of this - but you should check it with NZIS to be certain - it looks as though, IF you meet the requirements for one of these permits, there would not be anything to stop you applying, although you currently have a student permit. However, if you are granted some sort of work permit, that would immediately mean your student one was no longer valid. Also, any work permit would be linked to the job you would have to have been offered in order to get it, meaning that if the job ended, so would the permit, and if you didn't immediately find an equally skilled job that the permit could be transferred to, you would have to leave the country.

If you are thinking of staying on after your studies, there is a special visa category for graduates. You can get a work visa for a year after graduation in order to try and find work. Details are zag this link. It doesn't apply to all types of education but if your degree is on the skills shortage list, you are able to apply for this type of visa/permit.
