    Default 3 days in Christchurch

    Hi,
I am planning a long week-end in Christchurch at the end of October. Any recommendations for accommodation/ activities. Don't want to say that budget does not matter, but it is supposed to be relaxing, so no backpacker hostels, etc.
Even open to suggestions for activities/ accommodation around Christchurch.

    Thanks.

We really enjoyed the antarctic centre, and if you buy some package thing then you get to go backstage and meet a penguin. Art gallery was variable, some good, some that we didn't find all that appealing to us, but of course that's art in a nutshell. Some nice restraunts fronting onto the park.

But that was us a tourists, the locals should be able to think up some other actvities.

How energetic do you want to be??

Golf at Hagley park in the centre, plenty of other clubs too.

Walking on the Port Hills or hire a mountain bike.
    Trip up the gondola.

Punting on the river, stroll in the Botanical gardens

Willowbank for small furry animal activities

    Shopping

Catch a show, recommend the Court Theatre .

    Casino

As for accommodation, we've had friends stay at The Copthorne

Join Rydges loyalty programme free online and receive a discount. Great hotel and really centrally located (and there is a bus that goes all the way to/from the airport).

We've stayed in the Rydes and it was nice also the Heritage on Cathedral Square is good and if you have flybuys points you can use those too Sumner or New Brighton Beaches are both lovely... If you fancy a whole day out get the shuttle to Akaroa - just stunning...
Gondola is good, wouldn't bother with the tram, Hagley Park and the Botanics are lovely and a wee wander round the arts centre and market on a lazy Sunday morning - enjoy

Central city - Tram ride, arts centre, museum, punting on the Avon, botanical gardens, hagley park, cathedral.

Beaches - Sumner and Scarborough are pretty nice.

Port Hills - Gondola ride. Visit Akaroa, Lyttleton, take a ferry to Quail Island or Diamond Harbor. Godley House was good... before the earthquake.

Others - Willowbank Wildlife reserve or Orana Wildlife park, Travis Wetlands.

We have stayed here & it was WONDERFUL! http://www.theclassicvilla.co.nz/

They let you use the kitchen and living room as if it were your own and serve a phenomenal homemade breakfast. We negotiated the rate at the time but there were a few of us. Perfect location to everything.

    Have fun.

For hotels, Novotel is very nice, newly refurbished and right on the edge of Cathedral Square.

We stayed at Pounamu Apartments on Frankton Road. I highly recommend it! Brand new, very modern, super WARM and walking distance to main centers. Very good price too.
