Default Staying in a place for >2 weeks: discounted accommodation?

Would most backpackers' hostels offer discounted accommodation during off-peak season if we were to stay for a few weeks?

Such as maybe $200 a week for a single room or such.

It's difficult finding a flat to stay in for such a short duration, but typical nightly prices ($50/night for a single room at a backpackers') is a little steep for several weeks as well.

Besides, wouldn't it make good use of their rooms during off-peak seasons?

Yes, almost certainly but get ready to haggle and ask around. Almost all places offer reduced rates for longer stays, the trick is to haggle that price down.

Would 200$/week (without breakfast or anything, just the room) be a reasonable price to aim for during October then? Not in the major tourist areas such as Queenstown either.

If you were in christchurch that would be what we would charge in our share house so yep it would be reasonable, in the hostel itself we would charge $250

You can only ask, we arrived last June, and got discount at both places we stayed, tell them you expect to be staying at least xyz and ask what discount they can give,

try a couple of places and then say such and such is happy to charge us.....

can you match that because we would really prefer to stay here - worth a try.

Haven't had any luck in Hanmer Springs (need to be there for work) - apparently it's school holidays then, so no large discounts for long term stays.
