Telecom, 2 degrees and Voda sell prepay ones - best bet is to go into their shops.
2 degrees is cheapest but doesn't have much coverage in their cheap zone so you'll need to check where you are going to be (it is cheap where they have their own transmitters but where they don't they use Voda's and the price goes up accordingly).
Telecom is fastest and has the better 3.5G coverage around the country.
[Note that I do work for Telecom but try to be unbiased - however I may not manage it totally as the more people use us the higher my bonus at the end of the year! ]
There is a vodafone shop in Auckland airport. they do a prepay dongle for $99 with i think $30 credit on it.
You have to buy a data bundle with the credit or you get charged as a casual user at $1 a meg It's not hard to do, just read the instructions carefully before logging on!

It's what I used when I came over for a visit, and I'm still using it now but on an account as I don't have a landline here
What are the dongles like for Skype?
Mine works fine, even for video calling. My signal varies from poor to excellent and I do have 3g coverage here on 850mhz, not the super speed 2100mhz you get in the major towns.
If you don't use very much data in the month, Telecom's plan works well. On the $30 prepay plan, you pay $0.10 per MB or $30, whichever is less (up to 500 MB). If there is extra $ left in your plan, it carries forward to the next month unlike the others that expire. Telecom has been good for me as I use the mobile internet infrequently so I have been able to use the same $30 voucher for more than 1 month.
This is a bit OT but I had a minor fffuuuu.. moment a few days ago.
TeliaSonera started the LTE pilot last spring here and I just happened to check what's the status in Sweden. Since Telia and Sonera merged, they've pretty much shut down all the progress on the Sonera-side (Finnish part, a bit like Aus company buying an NZ company and everything starts to happen just in Aus although NZ part was superior before the merger..).
LTE (4G) available in about 250 cities. 120 NZD/month a flat rate for 18 month contract, includes USB dongle. In the 4G cities, mobile data rates up to 80 Mbit/s, typically 20-40 Mbit/s. If 4G isn't available, goes down to 3G/3.5G (up to 16 Mbit/s). Includes access to some 4300 wi-fi hotspots.
(And no, Sweden isn't really that big country compared to NZ)
PS. 3G speeds are the same for 850 Mhz and 2100 Mhz networks.
I tried Vodafone and the dongle is quite good.
We got ours one in Christchurch, but I think you can get it just anywhere, even in Airport.
Great info thanks everyone! x
