Default Where are social club listings?

This seems like a very basic question, but I cannot figure out the correct search term to use.

I recall once seeing on-line a list of clubs in some city in NZ. But now I am having no luck.

To clarify, I am looking for social groups, hobbies, interests, etc. whether that be chess, knitting, cycling, tramping, debate, fishing, social dance, choir, etc.

But I can't think of the proper search term. When I use "clubs", I can only find pubs, dance clubs, etc.

    So 2 questions:
    - What is the proper term to use when looking on-line for social organisations?
    - Do you know of good generic links for such groups in Auckland (or the suburbs) and Wellington?

    Thanks

I just put in the name of the activity I'm looking for, e.g. Tai Chi, and the name of the neighbourhood, such as Mt Eden, Auckland. http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...=&oq=&gs_rfai=

I've found the local (free) paper a better resource - seems a lot of local clubs either don't have websites or are out of date / no longer supported / don't appear in google searches. The other way is to ask at local shops. Clearly it helps to ask in a camera shop for a local photography club rather than the local rock climbing society, but you get the idea.

    Thanks. Good thoughts all.

So is "club" the common term? Or is it "society"? Something else?

'Club' and 'Society' are perfectly ordinary words to use in NZ. It may be the problem you're coming up against with Google is that they are SO ordinary that the search engine is overwhelmed with possibilities. By the sound of it, it prioritizes names of non-specific clubs, so anything specialist you might want is at the bottom of page 93 of their list of hits!

www.adventurewellington.co.nz is a good'un, and affiliated with the meetup.com network

Sometimes, though, certain members of it refuse to answer PMs, so another group might be a better idea

I have found that quite a few things actually aren't on the net at all, or if they are, couldn't find them with a search.

Most thing we or the children do here are because someone told us about it, or they advertised in the local rag (casual sports clubs often do that).
