Default UK Life Insurance whilst Overseas

Having read a thread recently where someone had discovered that their UK life policy had a clause saying that if they had been out of the country for more than x weeks the policy was invalidated, we decided to check ours.

Sure enough there was a clause stating that in our case, if outside the UK for more than 13 consecutive weeks they would not pay out.

So we appeared to be considerably at risk over our UK house which we still own and rent out.

However, having contacted our mortgage broker in the UK, they followed up with Norwich Union.

NU assured the broker that as long as we were paying our premium from a UK bank account, the policy was still active and we'd get paid out if necessary.

This is obviously very good news as long as it is true and not just the invention of a call centre operator.

(It's funny how these calls are never the ones recorded for training purposes... but I digress)

We've asked for NU to confirm in writing that we will get a payout even though we have been abroad fro over 12 months now.

Hopefully we will get it and we can relax a little.

Hubby's life insurance (Legal & General) have agreed the same thing. They're happy for us to keep paying premiums from a UK bank account, so long as they have a current address (even if that address is in NZ!).

Thanks for the reminder to check my policy. I've been wondering about that.

Looking forward to hearing that you get that written confirmation.

We've been told the same thing from Norwich Union. If you pay your premiums from a UK bank account it's fine. They also sent out a letter to our address in NZ to confirm the change of address from the UK to NZ.
